Ariel, there are definitely some good ideas in religions
Thou shalt not kill comes to mind. Not that Christians have been a shining example of this commandment but that doesn't mean that it's not a good idea to follow regardless of your belief system.

I agree Taps. In fact, I think the core will become
more hardcore over time. Nothing helps people dig trenches like the possibility of losing.

Success
Don't forget that we atheists can also live our lives according the Christ's adjuration to " Love they neighbour as thyself"
It would be my guiding principle had it been propounded by Buddh, Mahomet, Confucius, whoever.

SuccessWarrior, It is true that many people call themselves Christian and know how to talk the talk, but fail to walk the walk. But, just as in the day of Elijah, when he thought that he was the only one who was faithful to God, God had many that Elijah had not realized. There will always be a core of faithful Christians called by God to love and obedience.

Y, I am glad to hear it
There are many who put lip-service to a god above actual-service to mankind.

I value my church because it helped fight apartheid. You R a fresh breeze
And I am not of so little faith as to be offended by your best intentions without God. In fact my best friends are Unitarians and Ethicists (Ethical Societies started in the 1860s when Jewish leaders felt the need to be broader in identifying with the Amwerican melting pot. How times change....) Anyway Rabbi Felix Adler was one for a day-orthodox too! Then he became an atheist, with devotion to the GOOD rather than GOD. So ethics above dogma is their motto, and Ethical Societies were the first o bring REFORM to the US prisons and created the Kindergarten movement. Shalom ...yes, I do not want my small, defencelss god defended by me, or him fighting their gods. But if He teaches me agape through Jesus...wow!
