Thanks, but I was on an ambulance much more than a fire pump. I was astounded at some of those guys, in how good they were. I felt like a fumbling idiot.

You're right. I developed heartburn so bad that it took getting on prilosec to stop it. I eventually had to have anti-reflux surgery.

That run was a blur, but it was also spectacular to me.

I was claustrophobic, I found out, when we started search and rescue. It did take some talking to myself to go through with it. Thanks.

AVANT

That was a great story, and so well told.  My own house burned to the ground (fire started by a lightening bolt thru the roof) 10 years ago.  Fortunately, no one was home at the time, and no one was injured, but I lost most everything I had acquired in 20 years.  The firemen on the scene were so skilled and concerned that it impressed me greatly.  Thank them, and you, for  being there and serving your fellow man so unselfishly!

What a stressful,
but at the same time rewarding job. Great post.

By the time I was done reading this I was feeling the heat of the fire.  Great job!

Avant, but you faced your fears and did it anyway, that's what real courage
is all about.  I am still getting to the point of confronting mine.  You're an inspiration.

Thank you. I was so afraid that it won't be forgotten for a long time, perhaps never. I have logged many of the things I saw for this reason.

PostSmile! Your story is written so very well and captures the moment. I can only imagine the fear you had to overcome.  Thank you for the kind words about my health, they were greatly appreciated.

Well done
it took me right there.  First time impressions should be recorded. Later we forget things

Avant, extremely vivid, very evocative, superb at putting the reader in the scene. As you know, fire is an elemental, and has a form of consciousness. I'm sure you've encountered this far more than I have. When people say, "It's as if it is alive." Well, it really is you know. Moon_Spirit

Oh, yes it was. You get the training, but when the real thing hits, it's like...POW! You realize someone's in real trouble and you're it. My first few calls being a medic were really frightening, too.

Rumored
Thanks. I used to keep accounts of stuff I did, in between shifts. I stopped doing it a few years back, but I have several legal pads filled with stuff.

Avant-Garde, that was an adrenaline rush, wasn't it, that first fire?
You are a natural storyteller, Avant-Garde, I hope you'll post more of these.
