Azur--- Good approach to asking questions. A good "reporter" can write
about anything because he/she knows how to ask questions (to obtain information) about which he/she knows little or nothing.

Azur, I don't think it is enough to "be" "here".

1. There is no "here".

2. One cannot "be"  at a nonextant "here".

3. Blogging, to avoid becoming an involuting navel-dive, needs outside experience to remain fresh and vital.

4. Eventually, through inattention, somed nice men will come and turn off your power, carry away your furniture, put a "For Sale" sign on your front lawn, then carry you out the door in your blogging chair blogging on your blogging laptop.

5. Like The Algonquin, while one may get quips and thoughts here, writing must take place elsewhere.

5a. Did you know the Algonquin has an official cat?

One man's dull is another man's bright. I was once near to a job in London
as a trainee to write articles on a magazine that served the re-insurance industry. I'm glad I didn't get it. I think I would have had plenty of criticisms from my readers. And it would have been a whole different life from age 21.

Hi, Azur,
You take a very interesting perspective, actually similar to my own, about writing for oneself and/or one's readers.  For me, I enjoy commentary and feedback from everyone, no matter if they agree with me or not.  I like the diversity and varying opinions I get on Blogit.  I'm sure it makes all of us better writers, if we try to take on board the comments that are intended to be constructive.  Even the disagreeable comments are helpful, if we let them be.  Good post.  :)

PostSmile!  I found this post very interesting. I agree that a writer is responsible for giving something of interest to the reader.

Azur....it's very interesting. I'm not a writer; not a professional writer anyway, although I used to practise law. Of course, many would not consider that to be writing although it is how lawyers make their living: writing, talking, arguing, blowing smoke, making it sound plausible. I merely came here to read a friend. She suggested that I write. It opened some sort of emotional floodgate. My writing was/is cathartic. I do it to release and express emotion. I do it to communicate with my friend. The thought of having a readership was an afterthought. Now, like all on Blogit, I relish the comments; any comment, or an emoticon, anything. (I've been here for 9 mos. although I've deleted all prior posts.) Clicks are nice but, who was it? Anyway, I ramble. It's interesting to see the perspective of those who write for a living; for me it is all just personal and I am no professional. My daughter is a professional writer. She's working on her PhD. She teaches writing at the college level. I watched her career develop from the very beginning. I guess I have some sort of love affair with writing; only I never knew it before. I think maybe I am lucky that I can write or not, that I can say what I want, that it can (maybe, sometimes) be good or more often, lousy and it doesn't matter. I don't know if I would enjoy it as much if I needed to make a living this way. Or.....would I enjoy it more? Moon_Spirit

I'm not after critiques and besides I think that we can take a measure from the responses we receive

Why are you writing it?  You don't need critiques, not on Blogit, anyway.  I don't expect critiques for my posts.  All I am doing is writing things that make me smile and which hopefully hone my writing and editing.

MarieClaire66, if I am in a skimming mood
I try to return later if I want to leave a meaningful comment. Poetjpb is a woman who once long ago made some constructive criticism of a poem I'd written and it helped me see something.
I enjoy our conversations and I have no problem with whatever mood you write in although of course i want t see you happy. Bear with this ramble. I am weary all of a sudden.

Azur, this is a very interesting article you wrote with pertinent comments.
I agree the onus is mainly on the writer, but i have been guilty of just skimming through people's writing and did not do them justice and wondered why I did not understand. The reader should have the courtesy of reading you properly, as in listening to a conversation. It is a two way thing, but the customer/reader is always right even if he/she is wrong. You have to sell your write. I have given feedback to poetje something, in a thorough comprehensive way, and I offended him/her? a bit, but he/she graciously accepted my feedback, people want plenty of feedback so long as it is positive... no one likes criticisms, but it is the only way to learn. Ypun is always good value for feedback, but even a short comment is always appreciated in any case. I don't always have the time or inclination to comment but I make an effort to visit sites regularly and offer some kind of loyalty and thank you to people who read me. I do like your post, so it is no effort on my part but a real pleasure to read you. I hope you are not too depressed by some of my posts, I try and be lighthearted as well. I find writing a real pleasure, and I am quite passionate about writing, as with everything I do. It is passion or sheer boredom or despair, I have yet to find a happy balance in my life, as you know it has been turned up side down for a while, but I am a little bit inclined to shake the cereal box and spill the contents of my life all over the place... just for the hell of it. Bad image, never mind. Here I go again, me me me. So look forward to your next write.
You must have excellent research skills as well I suppose, I admire you for being able to write about such difficult topics. I don't have the mind for it.
Bye for now.

Azur,
A former boss of mine used to say "The burden of communication rests on the communicator"  She was advertising director of a major telecommunications company and was talking about writing ad copy. I think it translates into many aspects of life.

I am engrossed with what you write just as you may be if you had a probelm with your sump pump or electric stove or whatever and I could tell you about it.-;) (By the way I am original Jack of all trades, master of none. So if you have a handyman type thingy just call me.)

One of  the main things that I received from  a lot of Blogit people was loving and emotional support after my Joycie died of a brain tumour. They all were more family to me than siblings.

Now I am trying to improve my writing simply out of interest in the craft, and using Blogit to simply hold myself together again over another troubling life issue, justice. And thanks again for your kind help my friend.

I think blogging
has made me more dependent on comments from others. It is ironic since blogging is supposed to be fres-spirited but I am constantly checking to see if anyone read my thoughts.
