It was delightful. But, boy! Was it hot.

Yes, snakes get a bad rap, I think. I've always thought of them as hidden wisdom, of being still and knowing. Only once have I actually been in the presence of a truly aggressive snake. It was a copperhead. I tried to kill it and missed with the walking stick. It was only about 6 inches long, but it came after me with its mouth open and extremely pissed off. I've never seen anything like it! I did a dance until the stick drove home and it was over. My dogs were smelling the end of that stick and jumping back for a week.

I think it's more musty than anything else. You can smell fish beds, too. They are very powerful.

I loved the history of the Negroes in Louisiana. They are very colorful and resourceful.

I'm very visual. I see them first usually. I trained myself to always watch the ground, from being in the woods alone so much.

But, it is also frightening when you smell one and you can't locate it!

Good story Avant.......and wow no one likes snakes!
One of my close friends had a boa constrictor as a pet and she's the only snake that I was not afraid of. She was about 8 feet long and about one foot around yet she was gentle and actually had a personality. In the world of metaphysics snakes represent knowledge and kundalini. I find it humorous that people say it represents satan....

Avant-Garde, that's another good story for your collection
Now, I'm imagining how a snake smells, and I don't think it's pleasant.

I loved that story and I'd love to have been there to see that too.
Interesting at the moment too because there is a young reporter, Chris Lackner, from the Ottawa Citizen newspaper who is making the walk of the Underground Railroad of escaping slaves from the U.S.A. to Canada.

They have a 'musty' smell. I've smelled them since then. Cottonmouths often eat fish, and have a fishy smell. Seeing them after you smell them is the trick.

I have always linked them with evil and such. It's no wonder, they way we are taught to see them. I find them innocuous for the most part now.

I find it hard to understand how you can smell a snake. It's a good thing I would image as you could avoid them before getting struck by one!

I litterly hate snakes. I have smelled them, my dad taught me. Such deadly ugly things. To me they represent Satan and nothing else.

OFFBEATS
I was on vacation when it hit. April 1 or 2 maybe? 1999. It went through north Shreveport, then jumped the river and tore up a mobile hom park on Benton Rd. It cut a half-mile swath through the woods near Cypress Lake. Six people were killed.

Yes, Harrah's is the name of the boat! I didn't know anyone committed suicide off the bridge. I have often tried to figure out what makes some people bet until they are completely broke. How sad.
I also did not know anything about the tornado. It probably made a big mess! I can look on the internet and maybe find something out about it...

OFFBEATS
I remember when they put those boats in. I was working on the Shreveport Fire Dept. They had a lot of people jumping off the Texas St. bridge, after losing everything they had. One guy they found a week later 12 miles downstream. I made several calls to Harrah's. Small world. Did you see the aftermath of the F4 tornado in '99? It was near Cypress Lake.

I always like going to Bossier City. There is a nice race track there and on the way back to Dallas I love to stop at the gaming boats on the Red River.. My nephew and I explored an old cemetery in Bossier. The tombstones were remarkable in that they were very descriptive!

Yes. It's probably twenty miles south, in southern Bossier Parish. I lived in Bossier City for 30 years. My dad's retired Air Force.
