Yes we do. The story I saw on last night's news was even worse. A mother put on a boat out and her two young sons crying on the dockside. Made me cry. A kid calling out for their mother in any language sounds the same

Most of us carry on with our day to day lives, Azur. We may be concerned but there is very little - if anything - we can do about the situation.

No it wouldn't have changed a thing for you to live your life as it is.
I think there is a time to simply stop listening, turn off the TV, and just wait it out.
One way or another we all have our time of "reaping the whirlwind."

Even if you were in the middle of the conflict, I still imagine that you'd
want to ice that cake for her.

The Blitz on London during WW11, and the flying bombs and rockets later on were scary, but in a strange way exhilarating. One felt so much more alive in the midst of death and destruction ; which is a well known phenomenon.
That old song, "The Bells of Hell" from the First World War was very popular then, and it summed up everyone's feelings.
" The bells of Hell go ting a ling a ling,
for you, but not for me ..."

Azur, going about your daily chores, loving your children, appreciating beauty, are not equated with indifference. These are the things of life. They keep your heart warm and alive and ready for when there is something that you can do. Where there is life there is hope.

I still always wonder how they carry on with life...
they still have to prepare dinner, feed children, celebrate occasions, too. Why can't peace be on the agenda in the Middle East? Yes, all parties would have to give up some of their demands. It's better to live like this, and growing worse. I have to go think about
our dinner soon.

I think it would be a disservice to those who are
out fighting if you had NOT baked and iced that cake for your daughter. My husband did not give up a year of our lives so everyone back home would stop living. He did it because he believes in our way of life and the right to live it in safety.
Keep baking those cakes and LIVING! There is no greater honor you can bestow up any service member than enjoying the life you have.

Your post was profound in its simplicity. Yes, there are tragic things happening, but we must live and teach others how to be. Our kids will learn to cower in fear at the rantings of a few madmen, or have faith in humanity's ability to resolve matters. I, personally, do not like to dwell on catastrophies much, as they are too depressing. But, if if urges you to lend a helping hand to someone less fortunate, it has served its purpose.

Thanks Malcolm, although the news gathering was exemplary
in the cases I refer to here. The reporters drew out the human stories which show the implications of these events on real people. I looked at the pharmacist and his pregnant wife and I wondered what they were supposed to do to prevent this. Now they must think not only about where to find the next dinner but a safe place to have their baby

and exactly why more and more people are receiving their news via blogs as opposed to the main news networks,

Better to bake a cake than buy a HumVEE
Pretty low-impact I'd say, versus gunning a jet-ski around a local lake, or maybe watching a day of top fuel dragracing. Hope it came out well!

I witnessed this on one of our tv stations.
The interview focussed on the horror and the bloodshed and pain being caused.
When the interviewee tried to focus on the efforts and the political debate, the reporter only mentioned who got killed where.
Normally I don't tune in to these things, now I know exactly why.

A very good post, expressing my views exactly! Where was everyone in the media when Israel was enduring its hundreds of 9/11 lites over sixty years? Where were the daily grisly images of Israeli women and children mangled by bombs and shells?
The media saturate us with these harrowing images to further their own agenda ; whatever the hell that may be at any one time.
It seems at times that by making us so shocked and horrified, they will turn us off the very idea of standing up and fighting for our beliefs in case we accidentally kill someone in the process.
In wars people get killed and injured, and simply constantly showing us images of death, instead of using the time for rational debate of what is a tragic subject, serves only to obscure the situation. And further to inflame existing hatreds.
Blogit is rapidly becoming a forum for every racist, anti-Semitic kook and liar to propagate their odious opinions.
Thank you for adding your voice to the cause of reason
The way the media are brainwashing us there'll never be a solution to the Middle East problem in our lifetimes.

Were the roles reversed, I seriously doubt either the Lebanese or Israeli people would give a second thought to my plight.
Nor would I expect them to.
It's human nature to focus on one's own issues (no matter how trivial they may seem), and ignore the sufferings of others, if at all possible.

No. No easy answers. If you can find an easy answer, then my contention is
that you haven't thought about it long enough. Perhaps, not at all.
I vote in politicians to think long and hard about it and I'm sure they do, but even they have no easy answers. Well, some of them do. Or they think they do.
Nice to have you back.
