bel
You are such a good loving 'parent' to these children. You are a real parent. There will be activities in your town for children, ask around. You will do fine, sounds like they will too.

Bel... your local paper will have kid events listed... maybe he could

even get into a few weeks of camp.  It will probably cost you, but aren't kids worth it?

I can't believe that parents just let their kids sit in front of a tv all day in the summer.  For me, sports have always been the answer to getting a kid active and social.  There's nothing better.  And if he sucks at sports, then how about taking up an instrument or nature camp or something?

There is always a good fit for each kid... I hope you find it!

I think playing outside is a great idea!

IN the summer, we always played in the water hose or sprinkler. Or we'd go to the swimming pool...sometimes our parents would pack a picnic lunch and we'd go to the lake. I enjoy fishing and my mom did too.

At dark, we'd play hide n go seek. I think adults and kids playing board games together like Scrabble or Monopoly is a good idea too.

I'll pray for James that his mom might open her eyes to what she's doing to her son. {PS-Another thing my parents always did is they'd send us to ALL the Vacation Bible Schools  available in our neighborhood. All the churches of any size will have one and they'll be during various weeks of summer.

So it's possible that your kids could go to the baptist VBS one week and the methodist the next week and the assembly of God after that. VBS normally goes from 9 to noon Monday thru Friday. It gets  kids OUT of the house every day and gives the moms some time alone.}

btw, the teachings at VBS are normally things like loving your neighbor, helping out around the house, forgiveness, etc....nothing that might be harmful. Usually they teach stories from the New Testament about Zacheus climbing the Sycamore tree in order to see Jesus.

another popular story is of David slaying Goliath. As far as I'm concerned, there's no way teachings like this would harm a child.

Unfortunately he is unable to commit to the season and a large portion of the season is over at this point.  I am checking into a couple of things around town that gathers kids together.  Thanks!

what about sports? little league baseball? soccer? tennis? swimming?
That's what most kids do around here... they get outside.  Join a league and play.

I do agree it's a good thing but I also want him to learn to interact socially.  I'm looking to find things that will help him learn to deal with a social setting.

Hey bel, I know you believe this, but at the school we have a child who
gets into trouble alot!  His behavoir is so bad, it effects not just HIS teacher but all of us.  Do you what the school does to calm him down?   He gets to play his gameboy all day!   bel, this child is 5 YEARS OLD!!  It makes me sick!  It's sad too, his father is a teacher and has the summer off, the boy and his sister are there from 7 to 6.  The parents spend no time with them.  It's sad.  Anyway, it sounds like James is happy when he's busy.  I wouldn't call it slave labor, what he is doing is an education in itself!  Do you guys have a YMCA around?  or a bowling alley, or something?  Where other kids would be?

Bel
It sounds like you are doing a great job! Believe it or not...some of my great memories with my best friend were helping her father around the yard on the weekends....it gave me a good work ethic and taught me to appreciate nature. Sorry....don't have any better advice.

How about a regular game night?
Before TV, etc. was everywhere 24-7, computers, games, the web -- people couldn't stand to be indoors, alone and idle. The idle rich had travel. Working folks got together for card parties or games. They played Canasta, Pinochle, Bridge, Poker, etc.  If there are kids and parents, I've seen the parents playing cards, the kids playing things like Candyland, Operation, etc. Uno...  Monopoly, Trivial Pursuits, Scrabble.  They can be for two  (like Checkers, Chess, etc.) but the group games were best. Playing, learning the rules, etc., is the surface reason, but the real fun was in the interaction, the conversations, the jokes and stories that came up in conversation.  I used to get my dates to play cards with me to learn about their character. Did they have to win or dominate? Did they play by the rules or cheat? Were they gracious winners, sore losers?

bel_1965, I think the work outside idea is very good. He wants to feel acc
omplishments.  Then the writing idea is good.  If he is good with computers, he should write for you, tell about your school, tell about your teachers, tell about your favorite subject.  if he is into science have him write it out, then you can publish it for him on Blogit! and he will feel really proud!
