Right on, Jane!
So sad that so many people who sincerely love the forest advocate what is so destructive to it.

Thank you, LeRoy!
I have to wonder what standards of analysis are being applied to those old photos versus current conditions, i.e., what standard do the reseachers apply to both in order to make such a judgement? There has to be a constant in there somewhere in order for the comparison to work. Not sure what benefit underbrush has for agriculture, but it is beneficial for the forest when in right natural balance or, lacking that, controlled. also not sure how you got from too much underbrish to desertification.

You know what I think is the BIG culprit?
All the tree hugging environmentalists!  Thanks to them, foresting is restricted in a mighty way, causing a perfect tinderbox medium for fires.

You have some good points
Their is also research that claims the extra CO2 in the atmosphere is causing extra underbrush that dries out and creates more fuel and photographs from 100 years ago back this up.  Of course no one does reasearch on how this extra plant growth is a benefit to agriculture and forestry.  Human-caused desertification from overgrazing is also a culprit.
