We can't begin to understand

the people over there though because their mindset is completely different from ours.  This is one of the problems.  We try to read them from our viewpoint but we have no concept to work with because they do not THINK like we do. We can't get inside their heads because of this.  They look on us as greedy, materialistic and wanting to stomp all over their beliefs. They cannot understand tolerance of religious faiths either, because many have been raised and still live in nations where the state controls the religion, and how you will practice it. We find it hard to understand thier not questioning their governments the way we feel able to do ours.

I don't think there is resolution to be had.  It's bad.

It always falls on deaf ears
It is easy to go into places like Iraq with the feeling that the American mindset and culture are automatically superior just because they are Western. We must remember that the Middle East represents a hybrid of two disparate cultures. This area of the world is something of a cultural and geographic "bridge" between Europe and Asia, and therefore, their ways of thinking and behaving are not our ways. In the final analysis, it is easy for Americans to forget that they are not subhuman because they are different. They are human, homo sapiens sapiens, and they merely think differently from us. We have to learn to get behind their eyeballs so that we can either agree or disagree with them without denigrating them.
