MountainClimber,
To even begin to make sense of Russia one has to understand that she has never been a democracy. The whole democratic ethos we take for granted as being the way to run a country is alien to Russians.
Next we have to understand that Russia is faced with three major problems: China, the Caucasus with a militant Islam knocking at the door, and, last not least, a rapidly declining population.
Having said that, Russia's geo-political interests do not coincide with those of the US, and some, though not all, conflict. That means she will in many instances act contrary to US interests. But she will not ever again be the main antagonist of the US, , at least not in our lifetime.
Okay?

MountainClimber- Putin's actions conflict with his words. Even in the year 2000 when he was Acting President of Russia, he supported (unsuccessfully) a Communist for State Duma speaker. That same year he said of democracy, "Despite its shortcomings, man has not devised anything superior." It's hard to trust a man who's actions conflict with his words.
