Bel, I think you're right that most often people mean well, but in

situations that are so awkward and beyond anybody's experience, they don't know how to help or what to do.  That poor woman, who had just lost her son, will be walking around with a hole in her soul.  I don't know why your friends thought it was a good idea for you to meet, but maybe in some way it did comfort her.

I love the fighter jet exhibitions, too. Every year, at the end of July, the navy jets, The Blue Angels put on an airshow over Seattle, and I watch every year.  Fireworks make me jumpy but I get a thrill out of watching the jets fly over.  Go figure.

I love reading your posts. I was at your parade when I read your post. It was so folksy, real, nice, with the drops of ugly in any crowd where there are more than two. Thank you so much for sharing this. Be blessed you and your family.

Simplicity...
I love your perspective and how you express it! I'll never look at another parade in quite the same way.

Happy 4th a day late :)

I'm from a small southern town in Arkansas and they have a celebration every year.  We have a small parade with the high school band, some floats made by churches and a few businesses, then come the tractors, the kids on bikes and, in our case, lots of horses all decked out.  There is a carnival with rides and food and fireworks and beauty pageants and I miss it every year we can't go back.  There is something about a small town celebration where everyone comes home to visit...a charm that people who aren't from small towns sometimes can't understand.

As for the fireworks, my dad who was in Korea, used to love those big ones that just flashed and boomed really loud.  Said it reminded him of the war :)  As a kid I always found that so strange!

LOL Corbin
I don't know how mainstream we are but we like our lives just as they are.  I can sit on my porch at 2PM or 2AM and not worry about anyone giving me trouble.  I can go for my walks and bike rides without any trouble and I can let my child out in the yard with little worry.

Exactly Passion

We are not big city people and I suffer the crowd once a year for the 4th.  I don't like big crowds and Carl likes them even less than I do.

I love my small town and for those who don't like it they can go to an event where the pickpockets, etc... show up.  Our crime rate is nothing, last night the biggest problem the police had were a few setting off their own fireworks and some idiot who decided to LAY on his horn and not let up as traffic began to leave.  Both were handled quickly.

Whacky
Sometimes that is much better than fighting the crowd!

We had a few fireworks here. I can just sit on the back steps and watch!

Glad you had a good day! Take care!

I love small towns and have always lived in one till now.

I love small town parades and such. You shouldn't have to feel like you need to apologize cuz you don't live in the BIG city. We live in the big city now and OMG!

There were thousands of people in our neighborhood last night to see the fireworks and aerial show at our local airport. How can you enjoy things when there are wall to wall people??
