Excellent, honest post
When my kids were small, I overheated the praise atmosphere. When they started school, it was a bit of a temperature change, lol.

Passion
Honesty or nothing at all works for me.  Thanks for understanding.  It further amazes me that the people who want me to praise them, seem to fail to see that positive about others rarely comes from them, in any form.  I told one the other day as he proceeded to go on and on negatively about an encounter with two friends.  I said in front of the group, Now you have told us all they said and did, exactly what did you say and do?  He was shocked.  I told him that he was disparaging the other guys and that there was no way that he could not have done or say something.  He became angry and stopped talking.

Sorry to hear that someone's giving you so much crap.
I don't think we each tell those around us how much we appreciate them near enough but I'm like you...I want the praise to be honest.

Justright
Thanks for commenting.  I have read the "One Minute Manager" and a couple others by the authors.  I understand the premise, yet I can only assume that the people that I deal with are needy!  Believe me I over look a lot, yet there are some things for mutal benefit such as safety that must be addressed.  I am looking to see if there are things that I must change.  Yet, I have mentioned to the people who request it that if they avoid wrong behaviors, I will have nothing to say and when they do something that I can honestly say something positive, I have no problem and will add other incentives!

there's a management technique called "one minute

management,"  it teaches us how to find people doing somehting right, and acknowledge that, instead of always trying to find them doing something wrong.

many parents fall into the category of the 2nd part of the statement, they continually catch their kids doing something wrong and tell them off for it, but how often do they catch them doing something right?? and commend them for it!  I see it all the time.  Its sad actually.

A litle praise, when it is correct, can go a long way to internal progress, a little negativity when its not needed can go a long way to internal destruction!

good post though, enjoyable.

I agree totally ...

As the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius noted (a long, long time ago):

"Anything in any way beautiful derives its beauty from itself and asks nothing beyond itself. Praise is no part of it, for nothing is made worse or better by praise.”
