The beautiful game. I've been watching it avidly.
Your son will be fine. Trouble doesn't find you, you have to go hunting it down. We went to England v Tunisia in '98 in Marseille and had one of the most memorable days of our lives, mixing with the other fans, drinking to excess in the bars of Marseille and wearing our colours with pride alongside Tunisians, Moroccans and French sporting theirs. At the beach a small mob of thugs wearing England colours fought their way onto the front pages of all the tabloids. The rest of the 60,000 English fans in Marseille continued to have a wonderful day. My joy-filled antics never made it onto a front page. Except the front page of my memory-bank.
I am very jealous.

What you say is very true -
we shouldn't focus on the negative. I know we on South Africa are hosting the World Cup in 2010 and are completely excited - It is an excellent opportunity and will be a great boost for the economy.

HHMMMM...
I did not watch and can only say that fear needs to be replaced with knowledge and understanding. Appreciation can then grow and change the face and heart. Thought provoking post!

No you are not a hypocrite. It's like many things - much more fun when enjoyed with others. Makes you feel part of something. Here's an English

for you

My art teacher has a saying which applies to all of life:
"Only fools paint the world in broad strokes."
Meanwhile, I'm surprised how enthralling I've found the World Cup to be. Because, initially, I was really only watching it to appease my best friends (who are from France and the UK, respectively).
More than any other time in history,
mankind faces a crossroads.
One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness.
The other, to total extinction.
Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.

And to our British friends, put down the boxcutters.
Excuse me, they prefer to be called "English" now.
(Couldn't resist).

Blogit. Blogit uber alles!!
No don't take 'em down and don't burn 'em. Just order a pizza topped with sauerkraut and chorizo, with Danish beer, kippered herring as a side dish, and some curry to sort of tie it all together.
Where's Benzinha when you need her?

That's true Majroj
So should I take down our flags?
We have several different flags flying to take account of our various loyalties. The man in the flag shop loved us!
I think perhaps blogging has become an outlet for jingoists

Central America had wars over soccer.
Jingoists always look for an outlet.
