AaronB,
I think you just helped making my point for me,

! Remember, I suggested picking 100 players
at random (thereby avoiding an over-representation of 'specialties'). And I think that, aside from strength, which I conceded already, the soccer players,
as a group, will
win on
all other measures
, although
some NFL players,
individually, will be right up there and may win the odd category.

I'll grant that most soccer players
would do better in long-distance races, but they wouldn't have a prayer in any strength-based competition and would probably lose most agility, quickness, or sprinting competitions as well. Although, many NFL positions are specialized: lineman are insanely strong but can't run, cornerbacks and wide receivers are built for speed, kickers don't even have to be athletes, and so on.

kingmi,
I just really don't like Russert. Of course, I would say that about just about any of the people who work for the big media.

Nautikos,
I don't know about how the athletes would compare. I don't think the soccer players even break out in a sprint very much though. The game will never catch on in the US because there is just not enough scoring though.

saroo, with you 100% today. although I do not watch
Tim Russert. He is a Democratic operative and doesn't even try to hide it.

sarooster,
it's been a very nice and hot day here too, 34C (I'll let you figure that out in F,
) and I did 26 miles on my bike!
But that's not why I am responding. Rather, I'm giving you my response to your comment at MandaLee's, just in case you don't go there in the next while. It was an answer to your comment on soccer Here it is:
you and I see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, but not when it comes to soccer, apparently. These guys are athletes! We'll pick 100 guys each (at random) from the NFL, from MLB and from any of the major soccer clubs in Europe, and I can guarantee you that the soccer players will win hands down on any measure of fitness you care to use. (The NFL boys may win the strength part.)
Some years ago I took a European friend of mine to a ball game (Yankees at Blue Jays, the Jays won), and it was a great game. He was bored stiff because he just didn't get it...I think we have something like that happening here...
