We are right now a country where many just do not understand how freedom works. I think that is a large part as to why many believe we can go and force other countries to have the same freedoms we do when those countries do not seem to want them.

Even with my present issue with the BSA, I am still proud that I achieved Eagle. There is a lot more to it for my family than just me getting it. My grandfather was an Eagle as well and died before I earned mine, so my speech for the ceremony ended up being about him. One of my most cherished possessions is his Eagle badge which is framed and has a name plate with the date he got his Eagle and bellow that is a name plate with the date I got mine.So I have an emotional area when it comes to scouting and that is part of the reason why this issue has bothered me and so when I hear someone using the BSA to spread such dissemination it really gets to me. Due to a certain blogger here who was defending the BSA doing this, I just had to make sure my two cents worth was heard.

I would bet that Scouts is still worth doing. Hopefully you will find a good troop. You might check with scoutingforall.org and see if they can help you. I have heard of some that ignore the B.S. rules right now and actually do teach the right values.
One thing I do know is that I am not the only Eagle Scout to feel this way. I think there is a majority of us who are against what the BSA is promoting, but the BSA is not being run by those who were Scouts and that is the real problem.
If you feel you son can use a good male role model, then hopefully BSA might help you find one.

Kooka lives – see, this is exactly what I try to tell people, especially these burnt up rednex around here. Words just can not be tossed to the side just because they had the damn ability to learn to speak. In High School (may make myself a little target, but oh well.) we had a nut that decided it was OK to say prayer every morning. I felt so shocked as I sat in (of all things) my Gov. class to hear this. What was even MORE shocking, was the lack of shock from everyone else. Except my Gov. Teacher. He did say as he pointed to the speaker, and shook his head, “You are listening to history in the making”. We had to check yes or no if we wanted it. Which infuriated me. If THIS is allowed to slip by, what else HAVE to be as well? Since it was a majority, it was allowed. For a while. Big stink, those who signed “no” (and admitted it) were fucked with and one poor boy who was always messed with for being a “Satanist”..(wore black, listened to metal..long hair) got beat by a gang of Well dressed Christians, doing his work. Or, using his name (a word) to be the dickless rich snot that they were. I got a good bit, but not to much. My cousin (true good guy_) was head cheese up there, and no one wanted to be mean to his cousin.
I thought about my little boy joining this year, with his dad in jail and no male fit to even breathe around me much less my son, I thought it would do him some good.

Right you are, kooka. Words have subjective power, otherwise they're
mere symbols relating an idea. And you are correct in the distortions by the radical religious right (and others) of the freedoms provided for and protected by the Constitution. Their particular faith and expressions are protected, as are yours and mine, from deniability and persecution. And, like you stated, atheism doesn't preclude one from be moral and patriotic.

you are giving the corrrect meaning to the word, "god"
since god really can have various meanings, not just the limited one that Christians (not all) want to ascribe to it.
