Xeno-x - Fear may be a necessary survival instinct but what purpose does it
possibly serve to proliferate irrational fear?
That ultimately is the net result of teaching a belief in the spiritual realm, be it for religious or non religious reasons.

redwood - thank you for the outline on the relationship of Mary to the
Muslim world.
It is interesting but a bit irrelevent dontcha think? The point is that members of any given religion will only have visions of their own religious icons.

gomedome- you mentioned that Muslims never see Mary
I am not Catholic and don't know a lot about the subject. It is my understanding, however, that Muslims and Catholics alike participate in worship at the alledged "sightings of Mary". Muslims regard Jesus as a prophet rather than as a savior, and they do have high regard for Mary. Some Muslim groups regard Fatima (Mohammad's favorite daughter) as a seventh century incarnation of Mary. It is interesting to note that the town of Fatima, Portugal was named during the eighth century Muslim occupation of that country. This was the location of the so called 1917 "Miracle of Fatima", where a few Portuguese children alledgedly had a conversation with Mary, who told them of future events. These messages have been revealed to the public by the Vatican over a period of time. "Not all that glitters is gold". I would not participate in Mary worship personally. It is an interesting phenomina, anyway.

fear developed in the first
one-celled creature once it saw that it could be eaten ay another.
it is a protective mechanism -- you really don't want to stand there while a tiger jumps on you do you?
the compex human brain, probably needs a little fear.
in a society where there might be few outside things to fear (ha!) the brain needs to add fear to its emotional diet, maybe in order to keep the entire body exercised in preparation for the possibility that the whole system might need to utilized in an actual fearful situation
I thnk we all at one time or another give way to irratonal fears -- this just might be the reason.
