While I see where you are headed with this line of thinking, you are making an assumption that has not been authorized. You know only that both Red and Green live somewhere in the forrest, not necessarily down either of the 3 paths of the road. They could live far back behind you, on either or both sides of the road and have to walk to get there. They could live straight ahead of you in the very middle of the Y at a point or points equidistant from both legs, etc., etc. You simply do not know, and can not make that assumption. You do know that they can hear you and answer you with a "YES" or "NO."
CLUE #1 This is an exercise in complex logic, and you must definitely step "outside the box" in order to solve it.
CLUE #2 When it is all done and over, after you have formulated the correct question, you will STILL not know whether the tribesman you were talking to was Red or Green or whether he lied or told the truth. But, if you formulate your question properly, you will definitely know which fork to take to get the hell out of there! Neither can you go backwards. You must meet the challenge that has been presented to you. You are the master here, and only you can determine your own fate!

WHERE DO YOUR PEOPLE LIVE?
If he's green then he will point you to his home.
If he's red, then he will point to Green's home.
Then you follow the road to the Greens -- and, voila! ask the way out.
