mysteria - I agree that it is true to a certain extent
but the importance of grammar depends on what field an individual works in. For example: I have spent the last 20 years in a business environment where I can say that my communication skills were adequate but now that I am attempting to write "stuff", adequate will no longer suffice.

i think as long as you are communicating what you intend to effectively
typos and misspelled words, etc. are excusable. What is not excusable is that people are sadly discouraged for fear that they will be judged according to their grammar skills. I know plenty of intelligent people that aren't very proficient grammarians. I say, "so what?"

People can be so petty. I wouldn't worry about it. At least you know they're reading your posts thoroughly

I'm so pleased to see that I provided fodder for a minimum of
two of your posts. To be so blessed . . . how do I rate?!

I write in Microsoft Word then copy and paste for posting. Not only do I check for spelling mistakes, but word count and passive sentences. Some things still get by me and I often edit a post after it's "out there." Only my comments are keyed "live," but I go over them with the proverbial fine-toothed comb before releasing. (It's a good thing too. In the previous sentence, I spelled comb c-o-m-e the first time.) I have a true passion for words and writing. How I say it is just as important as what I say. Writing comes easily. It's a talent, similiar to singing, dancing or any other. Some have it and some don't, but that shouldn't prevent anyone from having a good time with it. The only true "sin" is knowing you could try harder, but refusing to do so.
If I can figure out what the writer is trying to say, the typo's and mistakes don't bother me. Most times, I don't catch them because my mind automatically corrects them before they register.

Sturgis - if the truth be known, I'm beginning to have senior's moments
Spell check is just a means of hiding this fact.

Gomedome...don't use spell check, won't use spellcheck, I just let
it flow, but that's mighty big of ya for using it and making a change. Kudos.

And you have a valid perspective...
No, you have a valid perspective.

No actually, I do see your point. Part of improving my writing is to be more colloquial, because I write screenplays. You have different goals and should do what you need to do to achieve them. Spell check away!

TVBlogger - that's a valid perspective and one that I adhered to for
quite some time.
But it is also important to realize where one is at in terms of their progress in becoming a better writer. I had to shake some bad habits accumulated from years of getting away with it. I also had to learn English properly once and for all. These were valid reasons for plunking along as I was doing without the use of spell check. Now however, I feel that my attempts to imprint my brain with the Americanized spelling of words and the correction of spelling words that I had learned to spell differently, has progressed as far as it will.

No don't do it
I'm also a ludite when it comes to spell checker. I hate it. Don't cave to his petty criticism. I make huge typos all the time... doesn't make me an idiot. Sometimes I don't even proof before I post. Hey, this isn't a college term paper, it's expression. I also break grammatical rules all the time. Maybe some people assume I don't know the rules, but we know what they say about assuming... I know the rules, just choose to break them in order to express myself in a more colloquial manner. No crime in it. Express yourself how you see fit and leave the pettiness to the petty.
