Oh, but I beg to differ with you, slightly!  That "period" you mentioned; that was all that was left of the Universe.  There was not even a space for it! 

Otherwise, yes, I agree.

one thing we don't know
is the nature of the universe before the singularity that existed before the big bang.

we know that there is a constancy of matter and energy per Einstein.

we know that matter unseen by our eyes, even through telescopes, exists maybe in greater mass than the seen universe.

remember, the singularity was everyting in the universe compatcted into a space smaller than the period at the end of this sentence.

but then again even this is conjecture -- exotic perhaps and quite tantalizing --

but even in this scenario there is an eternal existence of matter and the contstant matter/energy state.
