JanesOpinion - double standards are the entire point
Every adult person in our societies is responsible for their words. It does not matter what their political persuasion or religious beliefs are. If anyone makes disparaging remarks about any group from a position of ignorance, they get slammed for it and rightfully so. In the case we are speaking of, specifically the paragraph written by you that I referred to as a ridiculous statement, you were contending that communism and atheism are synonymous. Not only do you interchange the words as if their meaning is the same, you do not seem to understand the implications of what you have written. And worse, you do not seem to want to understand this. As if those who do not believe in your version of God are not worthy of this consideration.
As for your other comment, no I did not write the book on condescention, I was too busy penciling corrections into the bible. As for the use of sarcasm, the French have an expression . . . touche'.

"I would bet that you do not see one thing wrong with it."
And I'm betting you wrote the book on condescension.
(And non-believers accuse Christians of being judgmental? Wow! OK, thanks for enlightening me.)

You evidently choose not to, or do not understand the use of
sarcasm or tongue in cheek. Trust me, I was not serious about that quote.
What fascinates me is the prevailing double standards. I say something that hints of being disparaging or even mildly obnoxious and am slammed for it, while a liberal or a non believer or anyone who is not a devout Christian makes these routine statements and it's OK. I'm not justifying my comments, because they sometimes evidence a difficulty in "turning the other cheek," so to speak.

JanesOpinion -- yes you have it right with your closing statement
"But heck, who am I to argue with one so learned and wise as yourself."
So in the future you might just want to shut up and pay attention......okay that's a bad joke but would it help your mood any if I told you that I seriously considered not commenting at all on your posting yesterday?
I knew what you were trying to say. I too am glad that I was born on this side of the Atlantic and raised in a democratic society but in the expression of your gratitude you were extremely callous towards atheists. Not only by the way you expressed your gratitude for your upbringing but in treating as one and the same, a political ideal and religious convictions that happen to be the polar extreme to your own beliefs. You make these types of disparaging statements routinely, without consideration, and I would bet that you do not see one thing wrong with it. That's the reason I made that comment, I'm not going to apologize but I am extremely sorry that I said anything. Mostly because you will never get it.

Wow! The cr_p words were simply rolling off your tongue.
I hope it left you with a serious case of halitosis!
You've chosen to fillet people such as myself with your vicious words; I will not respond in kind, but will make a few short comments in response. Virtually everything I have read about communism in my 39 years was equated with some form of atheism. The two were not the same, but they sort of went hand in hand in some way or another as being similar. Dictators were described as being atheist, i.e. without belief in God. . After spending a few minutes googling the two words, I see the differences. Thanks for so nicely and graciously pointing them out. Like you, I am a product of my environment, but unlike you seem to be, I am open to learn and admit to error.
And yes, it is true (whether you choose to believe it or not) there WERE propaganda classes of some type or another which drilled into people's head a disbelief in God. Although you attempt to appear 100% confident in your views, even to a point of arrogance and beyond, I am of the persuasion that you are not always correct. Anti-God propaganda classes were a part of life -- and still are in N. Korea.
And furthermore, I do say that atheism is a form of religion. Heck, even Kooka posted a blog on the atheist "beliefs." But heck, who am I to argue with one so learned and wise as yourself.

Xeno-x - you are describing individuals of very limited faculty,
especially in the developing of their own personal disciplines.
Which I tend to agree with, we have seen many people of extremely limited perspective and equally limited ability to broaden that perspective, express their religious opinions around here.

with relgion especially
people who are already convinced of it have a problem with providing proofs that would validate their beliefs.
their mindset -- "I'm already sold on it -- why should I have to prove it to someone else? I have already concluded that 1 + 1 = 3; why should I go back and see if another conclusion is more valid?"
only thing is, they couldn't sell anyone else on their premises.
and, truth be known, were they really to investigate their premises, they would have to conclude the invalidity of them -- and then where would they be? could they then proceed to more validity? or would the emptiness left be too much for them to bear?
a Jesus parable about a man who was cleansed of a demon -- the space was empty and not filled -- then more demons came in and the man's state was worse than before.
an empty space must be filled quickly.
these people -- were they to be emptied of their present premises, cold that void be filled? could they begin to acquire more valid explanations without extreme trauma?
