exactly, blogflogger. that's why it didn't bother me when they gave him
life.  It ends his days to be heard.  It ends the appeals.  And the extreadition thing, you're right.  It is a good reason for us to abolish the death penalty nationwide.

saul_relative - The death penalty would have meant many years of appeals.
Related to other countries who will not extradite suspected terrorists to the United States - just one MORE reason (IMHO) why we should outlaw capital punishment.

And that is absolute truth, redwood. Either decision was alright with me,
just as long as there was no mistrial or dismissal on technicalities.  The one thing that bothers me the most, however, is that the United States will not be able to try people who were more directly involved in the 9/11 plot (unless we capture a few that are still at large).  Those who are incarcerated in other countries will be tried there because these countries will not extradite to the United States for fear our courts will use the death penalty, which they strongly disagree with.  Which is their right...

There is always that tricky "martyr" problem to deal with when dealing
with extremists, no matter their ideology or religion, blogflogger.

cost effective
You are probably right.  The death penalty would have been more cost effective, though.  We would not have to spend tax dollars to keep the guy incarcerated.

saul_relative - I agree with 'life' not 'death penalty'. It became clear
... he's extremely unstable, at best could have (maybe) been able to warn of a plan, and by NOT making him a martyr, we've taken the most appropriate action.
