The laws of the land

reflect the religions of the land.  So in most cases, there should not be a conflict.  If there is, you probably need to examine your religion.

One case I can think of is Mormon polygamy.  For years they practiced it in spite of the US government saying it's illegal.  Finally, the leader of the church gets a revelation from God, that even though polygamy is God's will, they need to give it up until the US recognizes it's okay.

I think a lot of other religious groups could learn from that.  And most cases, like this child abduction thing, I question whether the person who's breaking the law really understands his religion.  Isn't there something in the Bible about loving the wife as well as the children?  So why take them and leave the wife?  Divorce is a sin in a lot of churches...maybe he should have stayed with her and tried to live his religion and win her over as well as the kids?

Did you read the post?
The commandments would not work since the commandments that do not go against freedom and such are common sense laws that have been around for forever and day in societies that had never seen the Bible and therefore should be looked at as being non-religious. No killing or stealing and the like.  The Bible was not the first source of such rules and laws.
