- Go to Mexican Lawmakers to Participate in Los Angeles Immigration Protest
Welcome, missjohn316!
Truth to tell, none of us are native here. Beyond that, good assessment of the situation. The voting issue really raises my hackles. In my humble

opinion, giving the illegals an express lane to instant citizenship raises a lot of issues about their right to vote. It seems to me that someone who has thought highly enough of this country and its laws to become citizens in the way set forth by those laws would have a lot more appreciation for the responsibility of voting than would someone shooed in to citizenship as a political expediency.

Thanks for reading!
Good self-discipline, Jane!
Xenox, interesting take on it. I hadn't thought of the karma angle. So where's all the good karma for liberating Europe from the Nazis, Asia from the Japanese, Berlin from the Soviet blockade and the Wall, and all the other good we've done? And I'd hardly call the billions of dollars in investment and foreign aid we've sent to Mexico ignoring them. And, believe it or not, you sound like a cynical conservative: "Everyone hates us, but they love our money."
And, Xenox, thanks for the link! A+ for homework.
I'd not heard of The Century Foundation, but little red flags went up when I read this from their "about us" page:
"Much of the work of the Foundation is aimed at challenging broad claims about the advantages of privatization, tax cuts, and market solutions and questioning assumptions about the ineffectiveness of safety net programs, education reform efforts, and government oversight." If they're challenging the advantages of tax cuts in light of how the economy has boomed because of them, I'd not be inclined to give them a lot of credibility.
(Speaking of links, here's a link I found that sets foreign aid into context against votes in the UN: http://www.heritage.org/Research/TradeandForeignAid/BG1186.cfm)

It's just history in the making
I watch with interest how people react to these changing times. There is a great panic at legal and illegal Mexican immigrants 'taking over' many towns and districts. We fail to realize that "Americans" were not always here, on this land we call America. There were native peoples living here long before the first Europeans arrived. The native way of life is almost gone because they could do little to stop the new wave of immigrants with their swords and muskets and cannon and armies and diseases. The natives were conquered and decimated and shooed onto reservations set in the middle of nowhere on non-arable land.
It just happened, over time, before their eyes.
I feel that we are witnessing a new kind of conquering. Instead of seizing the land with weapons and force, the new immigrants are conquering by sheer numbers. As more of them become legal, they develop a collective buying power that is hard to ignore. They also gain political clout with the ability to vote. They also find that there are many places where they can get buy without speaking English.
It's happening, over time, before our eyes.

one moire thing -- froj the looks of Mexico's actions
it really looks like they hate us just like about 70% of the world hates us, and for good reason (see below)
you want to continue this BS, just like you want to continue the BS about Iraq and other things, and it comes back to you -- and the U.S. will come out the biggest loser in the history of the world.
we need to stop Bush -- we need to counter your BS.

i bet you regret
that we didn't annex Mexico when we had the chance.
but no, we left them out there separate and poverty stricken and ignored them for hundreds of years
sort like African Americans were ignored
and the Middle East problems
and they've all come back to us.
I consider the whole thing Karma for the atrocities and negligences of the U.S. government for over a century.
