urban critters
I live in an urban area, but we are not far from a wooded area and a zoo. So we have deer, possums, raccoons, and a rooster. No one can figure out where the rooster comes from, but he crows at the crack of dawn. That is not what gets us up, though. We have a very vocal female cat named Puddance who gets us up in the morning. Her timing is usually pretty consistent.
Thank you for your answer to my "Why Would They?" question. I think that you came as close to a perfect answer as anyone possibly could.

Fascinating retelling-
I especially enjoyed the comment re: not having to be asleep to count sheep. Because of the hour, I'm about to start counting. I won't be able to tell if I'm awake or asleep, I'm afraid!
