I knew it! Y'all are aquarists also!
Six years is a long time for a betta! (Three years is a long time for a betta!).
Betta's don't eally eat plants, but the tiny near-microscopic critters that arise from them they find nutritious; and, they probably just enjoy killing something once in a while.
I'm toying with a guide to carefree aquariums, but I want to see what's been done in that area first, so my latest excuse is to wait for my cheap copies of the Dummy and Complete Idiot versions to arrive...so I can avoid what they wrote.

Truthfully
We are still waiting for the twins to try and take them out of the bowl to play with them.
We don't fight them. We don't plan to breed them, just counting down the days.
Tom has a 75 gallon tank, so we have had quite the experience with numerous fresh water fish--pre-teens days.
