Redwood...
I met a Russian when we were doing some work in Kirkland two years ago, a most interesting fellow. One odd thing though, he thought we were crazy to eat potatoes with the skins on. It seems in Russia, the preferred fertilizer is human waste, and naturally, who would eat a potato skin in that case?

from another Washingtonian
I live and work in an apartment complex which is predominately Slavic (Ukranian, Moldovian, Lithuanian,
Byelorus, etc.). Most of them are here to contribute something, raise their families the right way, and they respect our culture. I do not have a problem with these people, even if they do have a tough time with our language.
There are a few who are here to get something for nothing. I agree that it has become too easy to imigrate to this country. The ones who cames here in the 1940s and 1950s will tell you that immigration was very restricted in those days. Why could we control our borders then and not now?
I guess that there are too many legislators in this country who think like the majority of our illustrious "House of Representatives" in Olympia. I hope that you noticed that I used the term "Representatives" very loosely.

I'm afraid that the only French that I know is, "Qui a coupe le fromage?" and I thought that might not be appropriate at the moment of conflict.

Would you believe that I was scolded by a waiter in a fancy restaurant in Paris because I said, "Thank You," instead of saying, "Merci."

Darkke...
I agree, but the task is huge when we look at how many are already here. I'm glad I don't have to try to make everyone happy.

I think it's only reasonable to learn the language...and the culture/customs of the people in a country you want to visit. And more if you plan to stay and work for any extended time.
What I don't think is reasonable is shutting the doors and limiting the number of people who are allowed to come legally. It's just a number, it's not about who they are, or what they can or will do when they get here. I think we need to focus more on the what are you going to do in our country and less on how many are coming. If they want to come to work, then fine. If they want to bring drugs and crime...keep them out.
I know it's not easy if someone lies about their intentions, but police records and job offers/skills would be pretty good clues.
