I think you're on to something very important. Apathy should not necessarily mean insouciance. One is about malcontent, and the other about inner peace. Even old souls would do well to make the distinction.

I would guess that a person who gives the excuse, "I didn't choose to be here," for not caring, would probably manufacture some other excuse if he had chosen life over not ever being.   We are what we are.
