Actually, I have not, Fiona (though, I would like to).
I have a close friend and classmate who's from South Africa, however, so I may visit there in the near future.

Hi,
Good to meet someone who knows a bit about Africa. Being raised here, I have always been taught a healthy respect for the wildlife. To be honest, I thionk hippos are gorgeous - but only at a distance. It's good to know that some people abroad have an idea of how dangerous our animals can be. I'll never forget once when a rhino charged our pick-up truck when we were on a game drive - fortunately, it was only a warning and he stopped before hitting us. My brother and I've also been bitten by a lion - true story. It was a "teenager" so luckily not fully grown and attacked my brother. Then bit me when I tried to pull him off. You can tell the genius that lions tend to look for weak prey whenever possible. Have you ever been to Africa?

Thanks for the advice, fionajean ...
Btw, I'm sure you already know this, but in Africa, hippos kill more people per year than any other animal.

Hi there
sounds like a colleague of mine who wouldn't swim in Midmar Dam (a freshwater dam about 90 km from the sea) because she was afraid of sharks. Living in Africa, I would suggest that you bring the genius here and tell her to go pat the hippo - they are such friendly, cute creatures after all. (She'll get bitten in half and problem would be solved.) As for the hippo eating a lion, I suppose it could but the lion, like most Africans, knows well enough to keep it's distance from a grown hippo. It's more likely that a lion would eat a baby hippo, if it could avod the mother. Good luck - just pray she doesn't reproduce.

Mamzy,
I just thought of the dolls you said you collect. I can get a little Blues Quartet of stuffed Bullfrogs, replete with carved-wood instruments. They are all mounted on a little plank and are standing on their back feet. If you're interested, I could get down to Guaymas, Sonora and pick up a set or two. I'll have to check with Customs before I go. I don't want to go all the way down to pick them up if I can't get them back across the border. Hiring a Coyote to get across in the desert without water would just be too expensive, and I sure don't need a bust.

Mamzell,
Is she for real? Is anyone that dumb? Come on, now. She's got to be jerking your chain. Of course, simpleton comments are quite the fad now. Remember Chicken of the Sea girl? The one who didn't know that buffaloes could fly with such little wings? People like that aren't really that stupid. Are they? Please tell me they aren't. Would I have to do that to be popular?

She's 15, Penguin ...
though, she sometimes tries to tell people she's older (which is laughable).
The problem with Michelle is that her statements aren't merely stupid, but often offensive, as well (not to mention, loud). She simply has no tact, whatsoever.
P.S. I'm, like, all badmouthing her, and she's coming over in about fifteen minutes.

Those are pretty great.
I hate stupid people and like to make fun of them every now and then, and those were stupid. How old is she? Though those weren't exactly intelligent, my French teacher the other day was telling us about a conversation she overheard at the salon. A lady asked this Frenchmen, who was speaking in his native tongue, "what are you speaking?" He responded, "I'm speaking French." She then asked why he was speaking French, and he replied, "because I am from Franch." to top it all off she then asked, "is that what they speak in France? French?" I found that quite amusing/irritating. Also, some guy once asked an aquaintance of mine here in the state of Virginia, "What State is South of here?"

you could make a little journal with photographs of her, putting her
quotes underneath the pictures. when she's older, has some maturity under her belt and knows better, you could give her the journal. it would be good for a laugh and an education (seeing the roads she's traveled, how far she's come.) of course, this will only work if she stays in your life. and has a self-deprecating sense of humor.

he just doesn't know when he's said something stupid or inappropriate or in just incredibly bad taste.
We were at a party, and he said about deep sea fishing, "...aw yeah, I ain't 'fraid of no shark. I'll just get the hook in his mouth and drag him like those white boys did James Byrd..." Ginger and I both stared at him in awe and disgust.

Suffering a fool in silence is actually quite easy. I do it all the time. Telling a fool what a fool he/she is only results in the fool getting mad at you. On one hand you have a fool and on the other, a pissed off fool. What's the difference?

Mademoiselle,
I really wish you were kidding. That poor kid. (She is really young, right?) Your brother didn't meet her in college, right? I'm glad you've found some redeeming qualities in her. Maybe she just doesn't like awkward silence, so she makes up things to say, just to get a reaction. Hmmm? Anyway, if you've restrained yourself so far, you are quite the pillar of strength. Your writing is great. Thanks. :)
