Martyrs
Some say hundreds of thousands others say millions died for Jesus in the first three hundred years of Christianity. Who would give their life for a myth?

Ah, Gome, such a diplomat you are.
Such restraint must surely give you heartburn.  I hope you survived your day -- Happy Easter!

Xeno-x - that is one of the best comments from you so far.
right on. Real intelligence is insulted by a conditional requirement to accept any improbable whopper on "faith".  Like it's nearing midnight on the Saturday before Easter and I can hear Jesus hovering in the air . . maybe he is coming back for them? We can only hope.

i don't see hatred or venom
just questioning

myth piles upon myth

and then it becomes truth

religion is turning people off -- cuasing them to lose faith even in themselves and life.

religion is what should have a millstone hung around its neck sometimes  --when it persists in maintaining mythology -- get real, I say -- live in the real world and you can then help the real world improve.

Burly-- I'll try not to hold that against you
You have a Happy Easter as well.

JanesOpinion -- The catholics hold that the Ascention happened on Easter

Sunday.

In their interpretation, there was no time period after the crucifixion where Jesus appeared in corporeal form as a live human being. So when you refer to those of theological background supporting the interpretation that you describe, you must be speaking of protestant derived Christian religions.  And there are a number of other simular but slightly varying interpretations of these two takes on it. To put it diplomatically, I view them all with the same merit.

I'm a believer too. Be blessed.

Gome, my apologies, you're right. It's Kooka who has spoken

frequently of how happy he is without God.  I wish him well.

Regarding the FYI, you mention many interpretations.  If you are referring to the supposed "Gnostic Gospels" and what they have to offer -- those gospels have way too many holes and oddities to be remotely believable.  They were written a few hundred years after Christ, and the whole tenor of the writings are too different from the accepted biblical canon to be believable.  That's my take, and the opinion of more conservative biblical scholars, which means to say that there are many who will also disagree.

Which means it still boils down to faith -- a hard pill for many to swallow.

Happy Weekend!

JanesOpinion - it's not likely that you have ever heard me say how good

life is without God.

The only times that I have ever even discussed the subject of the personal fullfillment pertaining to non belief  has been from a defensive posture.  Invariably arising when some religious chucklehead, assuming that they are living a life of superior self satisfaction to my own, decides to make derogatory remarks on the subject in direct reference to me. But I will bet that I know how you came to this conclusion, so one more time, Kooka and myself are not inter-changeable. Though a great number of our perspectives align, we have differing fundamental philosophies.

I'm sorry, but I find it funny when someone leaves an FYI about what is supposedly written in the bible. I am well aware of the interpretation that you describe. It is one of many but all I can think of in response is: what a ridiculous story if taken at face value. However, if a person is to examine how and why so many people are willing to adhere to such an outlandish notion, even today, then one observation becomes inescapable. That would be the profound and deep effect that a persona named Jesus Christ, manufactured legend or not, has had on human history and human collective consciouness. There is no refuting this fact.

Wow! Your hatred, bitterness and venom never ceases to amaze me,

but then I realize your experiences with the (Catholic) Church have been less than satisfying.

Actually, as an FYI, the Bible says that Jesus was raised from the dead in human form, remained on earth for another 40 days where he appeared to many, and then ascended into heaven.

You and other atheists/agnostics talk about how life is so good without God.  And yet, in your writings, I don't see that.  All I see is an ongoing antipathy and bitterness.  Is life really that good for you?  Or do you spend the majority of your free time fixating on your hatred of Christianity and what a terrible religion it is?  Such ruminations don't seem all that cheerful to me . . . but if that's what floats your boat and brings you happiness, so be it.

I won't wish you a "Happy Easter," since that will likely make you wince.  So instead -- "Happy Weekend!"

gomedome,

The long weekend thing was pretty clever.  Do you even know how good you are at this?

But however we choose to look at what He gave up, I'm glad He did.  Thanks for another good read.  And for whatever it's worth to you, Happy Easter.  :)
