Xeno-x - Ultimately we end up in exercises of applying rational without
evidence, to what is a manufactured chronicle to begin with.
There is no real "new evidence" but simply a re-interpretation of what has been written. Baigen contends that because Jesus told the Jews to pay their taxes and that his execution could have caused widespread unrest that it was self defeating for Pontious Pilate to have killed him. His position as Governor of the region had two fundamental elements to it's job description. Collect as much tax as possible for Rome and keep the peace while doing so. This is the entire basis for the contention that the crucifixion was staged. Where it smacks of the faked moon landing yarn that people have been willing to swallow, it does explain a lot about how the belief in the resurrection came about. People may well have seen Jesus alive and well after his "crucifixion" . . .But I still contend that both stories, the official version and the version as presented in the new book "The Jesus Papers" are both whoppers.

THE PASSOVER PLOT
Mr. Baigent might have done the same thing as Brown, and used a previous work for reference.
Many feel that the crucifixion wmioght have been no real crucifixion.
and for good reason.
Yeshua was taken down prematurely, without breaking his bones, etc. -- most crucified are left to die and rot up there.
Pilate allowed this.
There is a statement that Pilate was reluctant to sentence Yeshua to death because he "perceived that the cheif priests were jealous" of Yeshua.
some reading between the lines there.
Yeshua made a statement, "it is finished" -- a code, perhaps?
the spear
the vinegar on the sponge (some say that this was a mixture meant to put the body into a coma-like state [?].
and at the end of Mark -- there's no resurrection -- simply a young man saying that Yeshua "is not here" "he has gone before you into Galillee".
oh well, it's a funny world and here I am spouting my own agenda.
the truth would devastate Christianity -- it would harm too many people as a result.

M.P.O. - that may be true of situations where the individual has an
emotional investment but . . .
In the case of an individual supposedly presenting new evidence that refutes commonly held beliefs a certain level of objectivity is required to be credible. His new book "The Jesus Papers" is being presented as investigative journalism, not as fiction as was the case with The Da Vinci Code.

Is there anyone anywhere who isn't guilty of only seeing what he or she wants to see?
Perception is, and always has been, the only actual reality.
As far as "The DaVinci Code" is specifically concerned ... it seemed silly to me, so I never even bothered to read it. A couple friends of mine have, and enjoyed it (though only on a purely "entertainment" level).
