BlackPearl1-- "phooey" was fairly close to my reaction when I heard it
I never did catch where this 144,000 was written in the bible but remember thinking at the time that the individual spouting this stuff and her few cult cronies, had simply twisted something they had read into an idea. Some people are dangerous when they get an idea.

gomedome,

So far, I'd have to say, Phooey!

Having said that, I have no clue where in the scriptures this figure comes from.  I've read the bible cover to cover, more than once, and while it's entirely possible that I missed that part, I would think that's a part of which I would have taken particular note.  When I was a little kid, I remember someone rambling on about only 7,000 people getting into heaven.  I was a very young kid, then, and so 7,000 seemed reasonable.  I figured, well at least that covers eveybody I know.  Since then, I've heard people say all kinds of stuff, unfortunately, and this is only my opinion, twisting and otherwise distorting the word of God, for their own reasons.

Who knows?  Maybe back then, someone was just trying to scare my into eating my vegatables.  Eh, whatever the case, I'm convinced that nobody knows the number.  People just like to stir up emotions and controversy, sometimes.  That's the best I can figure.  At any rate, I won't be joining anybody in hell.  So I'm enjoying as many acquaintances as I can now.  Thanks for another thought-provoking post.  :)

Lensman - it's funny when you think about it
The exclusive mindset as found in all religions, has all believers, at least to some degree, thinking that they alone have it right. And this old sales pitch is still alive and well.

Gomedome
Only 144,000?  As you've pointed out, it doesn't add up.  It's a preposterous notion and it's elitist beyond belief.  Too bad for the 144,001st person to join that particular faith.  "Blind faith" is not necessarily a good thing.
