Fortunately, I won't be having any children ...

And no, I wasn't referring to Uma's hideous feet.

Besides, there's really nothing that strange or unusual about having six toes.

You mean Uma's 6th toes?

Charlize Theron and especially Naomi Watts I can agree on, though.

Another one - Susan Sarandon.  She was hot back in the day (the only good thing about "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"), but since about the late 80's she's developed these veins around her eyes that look scarier than anticipated college tuition costs for our children's generation.

Aaron, Jennifer Garner has a "man jaw".

As far as Uma Thurman is concerned, I think she's a stunning woman ... and one of the few actresses I would consider "switching sides" for (Charlize Theron and Naomi Watts being the others).

Incidentally, I actually have a post coming up about an unusual body part of Uma's.

Actually, Bingo, I have several hundred shallow thoughts per day ...

I merely dispense them one at a time.

This is where it all began, btw:

I see what you're saying, Azur ...
but my point was, Stewart Granger was no more convincing as a tennis star than Jonathan Rhys Meyers and yet the movie still worked ... because it was about a murder plot, not tennis.

I agree Jennifer Lopez has been overrated

she was at the top of a few of these sexiest or most beautiful lists, but Jennifer Garner overrated?  Pre-Afflack and pre-having a kid she was at the top of my list for years.

Uma Thurman's another one I don't get.  She's striking, but not all that beautiful.  Likewise with Carrie-Ann Moss (I think that's her name - "Trinity" from "The Matrix").

You only have *one* shallow thought per day?

I didn't think you could get by in this country with at least 20 shallow ideas flung forcefully at you per day.  At least 20.  As for the thoughts of your *own* creation... hmm.. can't blame you.

Strangers on a train
was not (as best as I can remember) at pains to make cultural references.  I was able to look past the cliches in Match Point otherwise I would not have enjoyed it however a little more diligence in the cultural and tennis research would have gone a long way. It is fine for viewers who are not familiar with those matters but it was rather distracting for anyone who is. This was a common thread in the reviews which I read after I saw the film.
It would be like someone parachuting in to make a film about Manhattan but only referring to the most basic stereotypes and messing up on small nuances that anyone with experience of NYC would spot in a second as inauthentic. If Ang Lee can capture the "wild west", Allen can do the same in London.

M--yes, it should be, Sexiest looking woman, in our opinion, in the world.
AS for the Yo girl, i see women I think are sexier looking each day in McDonald's in Detroit.

P.S. I, of course, only meant the inaccuracy tennis-wise ...
"Strangers on a Train" had plenty of irony.

posted by Mademoiselle on March 28, 2006 at 12:54 PM | link to this | reply

Well, Azur, you could technically make the same points about...

Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train".  (Yet, few would argue that film's greatness.)

Movies are, in essence, allowed to create their own reality ... especially regarding elements not paramount to the plot.

posted by Mademoiselle on March 28, 2006 at 12:51 PM | link to this | reply

I agree on all counts
although I  have to add that Match Point was diminished by its cliched and laughable depiction of the tennis pro - no one speaks of Agassi and Henman in the same breath; and London - with most cultural references off the mark AND a  dearth of British irony.

Thank you, Thunderlips. To answer your question:

I don't believe the full list has been released yet, but Keira Knightley was #5.

~ Among (supposedly) attractive actresses, I've always found Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner to be pretty beastly, actually.  In fact, I used to know a girl named Jennifer in school ... and she was overrated too.

posted by Mademoiselle on March 28, 2006 at 12:07 PM | link to this | reply

i think it is a dubious decision indeed

While she is a fine actress and a very pretty girl but i think she is far from the sexiest woman . I havent seen the list yet myself but where abouts are Jennifer Aniston, uma thurman jennifer love hewitt keira knightly.

However my opinons are not always conventional in that deparment as I feel ( and agree it would be a good idea ) that one of the ugliest actresses out there is Julia Roberts and also helen hunt. not to mention englands own kat slater ( played by jessie wallace ) who in her hayday won the sexiest soap star award yet every episode and in life too managed to look like she had been constantly just slapped in the face with a kipper.

good post

The more controversial the choices
the more magazines they shift.  It's possible to get through a week or year  not knowing this kind of stuff. It depends on which media you follow. Some people seem to take it more seriously than it deserves.
I have seen Scarlett Johansson  in  Match Point, The Girl With The Pearl Ear-ring and Lost In Translation. In a detached kind of way my partner can see her appeal.

FYI this is the rest of FHM's top ten:

(quite a bit of "age" on this list, actually)

2. Angelina Jolie

3. Jessica Alba

4. Jessica Simpson

5. Keira Knightley

6. Halle Berry

7. Jenny McCarthy

8. Maria Sharapova

9. Carmen Electra

10. Teri Hatcher

Of the top ten, Aaron, my boyfriend only agreed with ...

Keira Knightley and Maria Sharapova (though he would have put her "maybe, 12th").  He said Angelina Jolie might be in his top twenty.

I should note he has very specific tastes.

Oh, and you're right about People Magazine occasionally including some odd choices.

Scarlett, for now

I tend to browse lists of 50 sexiest or 100 most beautiful, but I never agree with all the results.  Those lists are partly about looks but mostly about popularity and "buzz" at the precise moment the lists come out.  Scarlett Johannson, to me, is attractive (I know M.P.O. is not a fan), but she would be towards the bottom of my top 100 if she was on it at all.  I've seen many women in real life who are more attractive than those on the list, but they don't have the fame or publicity buzz to be on it.  Out of FHM's top ten, in fact, Jessica Alba is the only one who definitely belonged there in my opinion.

One of my pet peeves - "50 Sexiest" lists that include both men and women.  There's no comparison.  Just keep them separate, so I can skip over the part about men.  Another peeve - People magazine's lists really throw in a lot of political or charity people.  I don't pick up a "50 Sexiest" list to see the Dalai Lama.

posted by AaronB on March 28, 2006 at 10:11 AM | link to this | reply

That's partly my point, brettnik ...

Although, personally speaking, Johannson's appeal (at least, physically) is lost on me.

I don't know any guys who find her attractive, either.

Well, these magazines are celebrity-driven, Gulliver ...

so I guess it would make sense that they would focus solely on luminaries.  Though, they actually have (occasionally) included a few chefs and congresspeople, too.

I just ask that these magazines be more fair and balanced.

You know what?
I think that just about every gal is the sexiest woman on the planet to somebody.  I mean, sexy isn't a look.  It's about sex and your ability to provoke sexual thoughts in the mind of another.  I think everybody's got that potential and everybody's got the chance to be the sexiest to somebody.  I think Scarlett is lovely, but I don't find her sexy and I think quite a few men would agree.  There are less lovely women who are far more sexy.

The Sexy Soccer Mom!

What I have always hated about all of these “lists” is that the only way for a person to be considered “sexy” or “successful” is if they have had a carrer in Hollywood or in modeling.  It drives me crazy because almost anyone can be made to look sexy with professional consultants dressing you, and styling your hair everyday.  What I would love to see, and I would actually buy, is for People magazine to publish 100 of the most sexy people in America, and get out there and FIND some.  Real sexy woman: the kind who work at the Make-up salon in Marshall Fields, the sexy soccer mom who turns the head of every guy in the stands, the graduate student at UCLA who is studying five dead languages in order to become an Archeologist and still finds the time to unwind at the local night clubs.  These are sexy woman who accomplish this feat with their own creativity and sheer charisma rather than utilize the professional paint job of a team of “consultants.”

Denigration!

I agree completely, vpate ...

(except for the part about Isabella Rossellini).

These lists are all ridiculous and serve as little more than "applause meters"/publicity ploys.

And, if you are the most beautiful woman in the world
...or the world's sexiest man in 2006, what makes these winners drop off or move down a notch in 2007?  Age?  Popularity?  Marriage?  What?  You  never see the same MBW or SMA twice -- right?  To me Isabella Rossellini (butchered the name, sorry), is and has for years been, the world's most beautiful woman...at least out of all the famous woman who would be in contention.  Wouldn't it make sense for one of these to stay in the number one slot for a few years at least?
