The Westboro church is an anomaly...
even on the Christian right. These people show up at the funerals of homophobia victims with signs saying things like "Fags go to hell" and "God hates fags."
In both a stage and movie rendition of the Matthew Shepard story, one of the features was liberal counterprotestors dressing up as angels and blocking the signs of the anti-gay bigots who had come to town to spew hate.
I admire their courage and conviction, but I have two problems with that. Only one is really serious. The serious objection I have is that I don't believe in countering someone's message by blocking it, no matter how awful it is. I didn't like it at college when people would tear down signs that promoted political views they disagreed with, or posted their own signs on top of opposing ones. I think it goes against the spirit of the First Amendment.
My second problem, and this is fairly trivial, is that for these high-minded people to spend time protesting the extreme bigotry of the Westboro people gives the bigots too much respect. It seems these homophobes are widely regarded as ridiculous, even among conservatives. If that is so, then it seems a bit of a waste to give them even the benefit of our attention.
