I don't think the herd mentality will work in God's eyes.
God knows our thoughts and intents, and will have no trouble discerning whether "Christians" made a choice to believe out of fear or love.

kooka_lives - it really is comical when you think about it

The major failing points of the "hedging one's bets" logic (I use logic for lack of a better word) are that it is premised on two fairly lame assumptions. To assume that a person can turn their beliefs on and off like a light switch is, as you have said, a complete and utter insult to faith of any type. This notion also fails the laugh test if it is suggesting that any form of belief is a choice. The other laughable contention derived from this is that a belief in this God, that people want to believe in, is enough to get someone through the pearly gates. When someone looks at this objectively, anyone suggesting that an individual should pretend that they believe is actaully saying the following: Lie to the omnipotent, all knowing creator because he is so vain that if you don't pretend to believe in him, you will be eternally damned.

This suggestion not only discredits the integrity of the individual's faith system, it makes the God they believe in some type of petty ego driven maniac.
