Go to Religion in the Modern World

it's slacking off what you speak of
if you notice the one link I gave -- non-religious comprise 15% of the U.S. population . The numbers have tripled in the past 15 years.
they make up the second largest segment of U.S. population, second to Christians, who make up 75%.
Now, some of those here on Blogit will tell you that at least half of those Christians will not go to heaven, so their brand really is in the minority.
Many other Christians have entirely different views from what you see here. They accept evolution and the scinetific explanation of the universe and its history. they don't want religion in public places. they accept the beliefs and practices of others who differ in belief and practice (such as those most vocal here on Blogit).
Me? I cannot accept the tradiitonal explanation. What Christianity hands us, as I've tried to explain, is constructs and imaginings built on the flimsiest of statements in the original writings -- result that the original writers very probably would be surprised at. I look at the empty tomb passage in Mark and see (as I think anyone would), not a resurrection, but a tomb without a body and a young man was sitting there (original Greek word [Matthew's version] says that this happened as the sun was SETTING) and said that Jesus was not there, and went "ahead of you to Galilee. meet him there." Without all the other gospels, one would think that the Jesus of Mark didn't die, but was taken away and is now back in Galilee.
This is an example. There are many others.
moving toward the more valid means discarding these notions of god and jesus and the universe and everything that medieval Christianity has handed us. It's odd how these bloggers here will hold tightly to concepts that were constructs of a Church that they now reject.

Xeno-x - it really strikes me as odd that religion still has such a
stanglehold on the attitudes and perceptions of so many people.
The barefaced lies, half truths and irrational thought processes we have seen countless times by fervant believers on this site, really makes me wonder how long this artificial and entirely self induced stupor will continue to plague mankind. The funniest part of it all is that even though we all know that we are dealing with a fringe element and that there are knuckleheads in every group of people, these character deficiencies are not readily found in any great degree amongst the non believers on this site. If one examines both of these fringe elements; bible thumping knuckleheads versus non believers, as good cyber citizens the non believers completely and utterly embarrass this small element of fervant believers. Except most of them are too obtuse to realize this. I find the same constant applies to real life. Atheists and agnostics don't seem to have any Pat Robertsons amongst them.

i'mone that says
it depends upon the vision.
????? you say
the box the box
inside or outside
inside -- you've got people that won't move beyond its borders
outside -- you've got everything else.
and god?
my best perception?
don't even try.
we have enough with the here and now to even try to worry about what and whether god is.
god will take care of god's self.
Christians and other religions won't have a damn thng to do with it.

blogflogger - It is a dicey subject.
I tried to avoid making direct references to intellect (or lack thereof) because it really only manages to inflame people as you suggest. But my experiences in life back the contention that a disproportionately high number of non believers are found in the higher strata of human intelligence.

A key element you didn't mention: the higher the IQ the less likely a person is to believe in a higher power. This isn't meant to inflame anyone. It happens to be an empirical fact which comes to light in the testing process when the study is allowed to ask about religious beliefs.
