Thanks for the read and comment Nautikos,
You are very correct in your assesment. Sadly, generals can't worry about casualties in war. Soldiers are there to fight and may die in battle or get wounded. In the US we do this vountarily as well as Canada. There will be conflict as long as there is man around to foster it.

sarooster,
I am not going to comment on whatever Murtha said. As a Canadian, I try and stay out of your 'internal' political squabbles.  But I want to tell you that your remarks about war and losses are very much the point. Human conflict has been part of the human condition for as far back as we can see, and there is no reason to assume that will change. And if you join the army (and remember, in countries like the US or Canada you do so voluntarily), you'd better accept the possibility that you might be killed. And yes, the losses in Iraq are sad. But again, let's keep that in perspective. In WWI and WWII, a side might lose as many soldiers in the the course of an hour or so as the US has lost in the entire Iraq campaign to date!

Scoop,

Yes, people should be able to change their minds. But most of the Democrats and the handful of Republicans who have changed their minds are not being honest when they complain now. The Democrats voted for the whole deal so they would not get wiped out in the elections. They were playing politics when they should have been standing by their principles.

brettnik,

Dissent is good. I know that's one of the great principles this country was founded on. But the men who founded this country were very principled men. Rep. Murtha is not a principled man in this matter. He wants to spew all this stuff know while being a Monday morning quarterback. That's not acceptable to me. He needed to speak up before we sent our troops over there. To do so after is not being fair to everyone involved.

I am not sure about our troops and the comment you made. We send cards and letters to several of the guys who work with us and are serving in Iraq along with a lot of their comrades and I get the impression they think they are on a right and just mission. I think we are doing what is necessary to fight evil. And there is a lot of evil out there.

Thanks for the read and comment.

I disagree with one thing, people can change their minds
and there are times when it is necessary. After three years the mission has changed considerably. We can't have mission accomplished on one hand three years ago and then today keep telling everyone to stay the course. I want politicians that can adapt to changing situations.

I just don't think that we can use the reason/excuse that dissent gives
comfort to our enemy.  This isn't the usual kind of war.  It is a Vietnam.  It will have no end.  Yesterday they were talking about how they "had no idea that there wasn't anyone who could assume power if Sadaam was ousted."  They must've forgotten about Yugoslavia.  It's too bad that we keep recreating the past instead of learning from it.  All of the soldiers I know who have returned think that their in the wrong place under false pretenses fighting a losing battle.  I feel sorry for those of them who will have to return.

Thanks, Burly, for the read and comment.
Rep. Murtha and others like him can't flip-flop in the middle of a war. How idiotic is that? We just can't quit the war. He and others like him should have thought about that before they voted the way they did. They were not worried about anything but looking good for the American people. Now, they want to oppose what they once voted for. Murtha in my opinion is doing a real harm to America because of his long time service to the country.

I think Murtha has his head and his ass mixed up! I'm on your side!

Thanks for the thumbs-up, Justsouno!
We have many problems facing our country and world. We need people to stand up and take credit for their actions. That's what I'm really trying to get at. Mr. Murtha could be a very valuable member of society in this whole deal. But I think he is choosing to play politics. We have the lives of many military men and women hinging on our actions here at home. We need to lend our support to them and not be wishy-washy about it all.

Thanks for the comment back scoop!

We may have differing opinion at times, but I really think you are a good barometer of how things really are. We do agree a lot of the time also I might add. Is that a good thing? You are well read around here. I don't suspect this will do much to my post.

I just wish all the Congressmen who voted to give the President the right to do what he did and then changed their minds would stand up and say something like, "I voted for it and I should have stood my ground at that time. I should have voted not to give President Bush the authority to go to war without really studying this situation. etc, etc" We maybe could have avoided the mess we are in now. It's a mess we can handle, but it probably could have been handled better.

Sarooster, Well you gave some straight up answers and I know you are
standing by your convictions, thanks for the mention but the way I am hated around here it will probably kill your post.
