Prof...

the largest (Maleficent, the centipede) is over a foot long, while the rest of them top out at (approx.):

tarantula = 9 inches

scorpion = 10 inches

water bug = 5 inches (though as everyone will soon see, they are very wide)

praying mantis = 7 inches long (3 to 4 inches tall, maybe)

"cat" = 3 feet (10 to 15 lbs)

Btw, if you meant how tall or heavy the insects/arachnids are?  Most stay pretty low to the ground.  Plus, are extremely lightweight.

The size.
Dear MPO.. I was wondering how big these kids are. Maybe putting a coin like a quarter would answer my question. Nice kids, but I will not touch or cuddle them, No. Thank you. regards..   Prof

Oh, he sure does, Katray!

Meanwhile, I know people don't like to fish around through past posts, so here are the links to my two previous sets of "equally charming" pet pictures:

Children are so complex these days eh MPO? ;)

"instead choosing to crush his victim's head with his claws. He then "drinks up" in much the same way a tarantula would."

"Disposition: Gentle, timid and shy."

I don't like spiders or snakes generally speaking, but he does appear to possess a certain charm.

Oh my GOD!!

You're actually older than my mother?!

Wow.

I better start using a bigger font, then.  Cause your eyesight could probably, like, go at any minute.

P.S. In all seriousness, my father was 20 years older than my mother ... so I'm used to dealing with all demographics.

DLS "Dear Little Snot"
It's a term of affection...  Your mother is obviously NOT an elder since she is one year younger than I am....

posted by FactorFiction on March 6, 2006 at 2:28 PM | link to this | reply

Um, what does D.L.S. stand for?

Oh and, my mother is 37 ... thus anything above 30 counts as an elder.

posted by Mademoiselle on March 6, 2006 at 11:39 AM | link to this | reply

Earn it, dear little snot? Hey I kinda like that...
I might have to change your name from M.P.O. to D.L.S....or maybe it should be SLS for sarcastic little snot...  How would I earn it in your book? (And it was in jest since I hardly consider myself an elder... )

posted by FactorFiction on March 6, 2006 at 8:17 AM | link to this | reply

Oh, I somehow missed this one before...

How dare you call me "a sarcastic little snot"?!

I only give respect to those who earn it, FoF.  Age ain't nuthin' but a numerical tally of years accrued.

Haha cute
(sarcastic little snot...kids these days...didn't anyone ever tell them to respect their elders?...

Answers:

(1) Um, there are these places called "pet shops" ...

Actually, I have to go out of the city, venomous animals aren't legal to sell in Philadelphia.

(2) Whatever I see that piques my interest at the moment.

(3) Not to own this many (all at once), no.  Because, you have to factor in the cost of housing the prey, as well.  And, I've had two die ... they are buried out back (by the gazebo).

Cute emoticon, btw.  Anyways ...

Thanks for reading and leaving me a comment so I knew you had been here!

so, uh, where do you get these pets?
and how do you decide what exotic species to buy next? I imagine they aren't cheap either...have you had any die or escape? Inquiring minds have questions....

I've had him four years, Ben...
(in which time he's grown considerably).  Thus, our estimate is less than six.  Though, as you note, it's nearly impossible to tell precisely.  Some scorpions can live up to 20 years.

It was the size of a Buick LaCrosse, actually.

This prehistoric arachnid was indeed the size of a Buick Lacross and was a close relative of ticks (the size of a Jaguar XKR Coupe convertible), mites (the size of a Z43.osi BMW Roadster) and of course the F355 Ferrari Spider.  These species were all easily recognized not only by their sleek design, and curved features that ran down their pinchers and stingers, but also by their characteristic shape, and hot women who rode in the passenger seats.  The Buick LaCrosse Scorpion, or better known by its genera Lambeosaurus became extinct almost 65 million years ago after these women realized that the scorpian still lived in his mamma's basement.

Nice pics. How old is Scorpion? Maybe counting  from the day you acquired him since no one really knows when the pet is born..

Not sure which model, though.

I'm hardly interested in "shock value", Gubby...

all of my friends (as well as my brother's friends) are used to my little zoo by now ... and I'm usually not even home when my mother gives the neighborhood children the tour.

I just try to post stuff that's compelling ... plus (for the time being), concise.  Seeing as, let me tell you, school and blogging do not mix particularly well.  At least, not in my experience.

Response to Jack's 10 questions:

1. Somewhat.

2. No, but then again, I don't always sense feelings of response from my boyfriend, either.

3. No.

4. Definitely.  Though, only to see if it's edible.

5. They wouldn't need to.  Cleanest animals on earth.

6. Not really.  They prefer "America's Funniest Home Videos".

7. Long, romantic ones.

8. Libertarian, mostly.

9. They think it's slowly becoming another Vietnam.

10. Me.

people are always surprised by that fact.  (Particularly, when they see him up close.)

posted by Mademoiselle on March 2, 2006 at 9:03 AM | link to this | reply

No, Freelancer, but they do sting.

I've been told the pain is similar to being "shot with a hot nail gun".  Personally, I wouldn't know, seeing as I've never experienced either sensation.

I have been pinched a few times, though.  But it was more of a "love pinch".

"Killing Method: ...crush his victim's head with his claws....then "drinks up" in much the same way a tarantula would.   Disposition: Gentle, timid and shy..."

Yeahhhhh, right.  gentle, timid and shy my *%$!  Just Kidding.  I'm sure he is just misunderstood and just is seeking attention through negative behavior.  He's lucky to have a mommy like you.  Most people would just step on him after they put on a really heavy boot.

Keep smiling!!!

Why in the world
would I want to view these any larger than they are. Those are some very good pictures you have there. I've seen these often where we live. EWWWW! I've never been much of a bug person, but I have a son who finds them amazing. He has some very much like this in a shadow box on the wall of his apartment. His fiance doesn't even mind. I guess that's why they are perfect for one another. Thanks for sharing this and making me think of special people in my life. Blessings come when we least expect them...

mpo,
Ya know, bugs don't really bug me, but I just can't get any psychological rapport with them.  Do you?  I can understand that you might see some kind of individuality with each of them, but do you have feelings of response on their part?  If there are a half dozen black scorps on a table and you say ''Hey Fred, here's your pill,'' will Fred come over?  Will they fetch a frisbee?  Will they go poopoo in the litter box?  Do they like to watch other bugs on TV?  What kind of conversations do they like?  Are they Republicans or Democrats?  Have you overheard any conversations expressing opinions on Iraq?  Who's their Mama?
