I especially agree with your remarks on how "personal"
success owes a lot to things outside of the person. The myth of the "self-made man" not only over-credits the successful for their achievements, but conversely causes the socially disadvantaged to be blamed for their "failures" which are really social as well as (in some cases instead of ) individual demerits. For instance, the 30,000 workers losing their jobs at GM are about to face joblessness and possibly poverty and it has nothing to do with their own failings.

you stop thinking about the values when you stop to think and not when you are fully immersed in what you're doing.

I'm too busy living...
to have time imagining a world that is one way or another... I am too busy trying to make my children feel safe and secure in a world where they watch their friends die from cancer or accidents, where they fear another terrorist attack, where they fear that the goodbye they give their dad in the morning will be the last one. I am too busy trying to make this world work for us to think of any other.
