Growler
A cheap shot at Jim Piersall who was a fine center fielder for the Boston Redsox after Dom DiMaggio but had a mental problem. Not very nice!

I started out as as shortstop in little league, but was switched to catcher.  Worst mistake I ever made.  Didn't want to, but we had no one else and, besides, the coaches son also played short.  Stayed there for the rest of my life.  Did play all of the outfield positions when they wanted to rest me and also played second base.   I was a leadoff hitting catcher in high school if you can believe that.  Never got caught stealing.  My boss, who is a chiropractor, says that I will eventually need hip replacement surgery from all of the wear and tear of catching.  We won one state championship and finished second my senior year.  Should have won it every year, but egos got in the way.  Went to Jacksonville University, walked on, and made it.  Found out that my manager, who was a former big leaguer that none of us liked, didn't care if I graduated or not, just wanted me at practice on time, class or no class.  Nevermind that I was paying my own way.  So I figured that it was time to get out.  Besides, I had started to get bored with the game.  If all that I had to do was hit, I would have never quit.  Got into coaching and enjoyed it, but kids around here just don't play baseball anymore.  Don't watch nearly as much as I used to(thanks to the strike of '94), but am a Washington Nationals fan and do go to their games.  Used to go to Yankee Stadium once a year and loved every minute of it.  There's just something about watching a game there that has to be experienced.
