Thanks Nautikos,
The port issue will be a lightning rod of an issue for sure. It already is. I just wonder if there are other forces at work here. I wouild imagine money is a central issue. It's bad from a public relations standpoint. Just about everyone opposes this. I agree with you that our ports couldn't possibly be safer with a foreign firm at the helm. This is all confusing. There will be an all out battle over the next few months. Stick around. It will get interesting. Thanks for the read and comment.

Sarooster,
I think we have two central questions connected to this issue. First there is what I would want to call the 'technical' one, i.e. the question as to whether or not the transfer of port operations from a British to a UAE company would increase or lower the current (admittedly very low) level of security. For reasons I have outlined in my own post, I think there is a high potential for increased danger to the ports. I am quite willing to be persuaded otherwise, but I have heard not one single argument that convincingly demonstrates that I am wrong.
The second question is the 'political' one. It has become clear that this issue has gripped Americans, has aroused a good deal of emotion, and is bringing together people from the whole range of the political spectrum in opposition. In fact, it is becoming a 'peg' issue, one on which other issues are being 'hung'. That can prove calamitous for the fortunes of the Republican in the next election. If I were an American, I would be a Republican, but I would despair at the political ineptitude being displayed here by the President.
