Trevor..
thanks for the comments! You are right, the whole existential complexity of that man's life is beyond our reach. Who knows what demons drove him and his friends to do what he did. But neither is it certain that there were any such demons, but simply laziness, greed and the hope for an 'easy buck', with no concern for their fellow man, in this case the jeweler. But in the end, the point of my story is not that at all...the point is a far more general one, which is merely exemplified by the story, and which is found in the last paragraph.

Your hypothetical situation is pithy, but not necessarily correct to the way things happened.  Perhaps it was just a mistake, a case of dares between friends that got out of control as situations (which are always more than the sum of its parts) escalate as they are wont to do.  It is a crime.  But did it impinge on some person's wellbeing, or did it just hold of the threat of harm as an unstoppable insurance that no harm would be done?  The bare bones of the situation, which is usually not enough pronounce judgement on... does not add up to as much.  Despite the billowing sails.  Being a devil's advocate can turn you into a devil, though, can't it.

liken Kobe Bryant

doesn't matter what he does off the court

as long as what he does on the court makes your basketball team a mint.

money and fame trump crime any time.
