Quirky
I would sell everything I owned if one of my dogs got sick and needed treatment. They are much more appreciative of what you do for them, and always love unconditionally.

I'd Say That You're Just About Even...
in your "grossly inappropriate" attitudes.
I own two cats that just entertain the heck out of me, but I also have two children. I think it's "grossly inappropriate" to regard children on the same level as cats. I'd never insult my children by even slightly indicating that my cats are just as important to me as they are. My children are far more complex than my cats, and I remember this everytime my cat does something basic and animalistic to remind me of that fact.
Cats are not children, but I can understand why you cannot recognize that concept. Since you have no children, you apparently cannot understand what an insult to children it is to think that pets are just important as they are. I'm certainly glad that I didnt grow up in a house where my dog received just as much respect, love and attention from my parents as I did!
I give your mother credit for biting her tongue. I wish I could contact her and tell her that I agree with her: your cats are not her grandkids. Your mother is not an animal who produces animal offspring. She's your mother. You should treat her as such and treat yourself with a little more self respect. Stop insulting your mother with this notion that your cats are her grandkids. And stop making her feel guilty for not buying into your way of thinking.

Oh, Quirks!
I know how you feel about Rocks, and it's the same way I feel about Ollie. We love our pets and see their lives as equal to our own! I feel that the life force is present in all of us - all creatures - and respecting it whenever possible is a higher calling. Great post!

Quirky,
I know that this was a hurtful thing to say, but even nice people don't always think before speaking. I've heard people say this very same thing before as a matter of fact I've had people say it to me before, and I knew when they said it they weren't serious. Nonetheless, some people will just never understand that many of us do have a "relationship" with our pets. All the best...
