This is great.  Do you mind if I make a couple (of hundred) copies and send them off to some doctors in MY town?

Nah on the new doc thing....

I've had too many docs treat me like this. I can do just as well on my own, without their help....and I am. I get up at 5:30 four days a week and do a one hour Callanetics workout. I'm eating low-carb and finding it very easy to stick to the plan. I eat a bar of premium dark chocolate every day (my one indulgence), yet I have dropped one dress size and 13 pounds in one month. So pooh on the docs. I have it made. But not everyone is strong enough to do this.

Once, I had a doctor talk to me like a dog because of my weight.
He has since left his practice for slapping a nurse.  That showed me he was a lousy excuse for a doctor.

If your weight loss practitioner is making you feel this way, go to another clinic. There is no excuse for this type of behavior. It is unethical! A good practitioner will want labs to rule out pathology such as insulin resistance or thyroid dysfunction. Weight loss is a team effort between you, your health care team, family and friends. While I am aware it is difficult to loose weight, I also know that many times there are underlying reasons for the weight gain and the eating habits we develope. The phrase "comfort food" says a bunch! Sometimes we do blow our diets! I am working with a woman who weighs as much a Shaq and is 5'2". She has lost 20 pounds in the past 6 months. Because she is a spinal cord injury patient she only has one option for weight loss, 950 calories per day. I made arrangements for her to have 1 day per week to intentionally blow her diet and have her comfort foods and treats. After 6 months of slow dietary change she has developed a taste for low fat, low sugar, fresh veggies and fruits. Our goal this year is to drop another 60 pounds. It is a life style change, but it doesn't mean you have to feel deprived or go hungry! Look for the book Eat More Weigh Less by Dr. Dean Ornish (sp?) My daughter has taken off 85 pounds this past year using his eating guidelines.. Remember it is a long process. I feel true compassion for you in your effort to loose weight. It is one of the most difficult things to do. There is so much more to a person than how much they weigh. Two of the most beautiful people I know are over weight, but they are none the less beautiful to me!

Maybe you should do an article
for your newspaper to make people aware of what is happening, although I suspect that people already know, but just put blinders on along with their deaf ear.

Mozz...
what really trips me out is the doc who berated me for being 80 pounds overweight---while he himself looked a bit like a lemon drop (wider than it is tall). And then, when I went out to my car, he was outside taking a smoke break with the nurses! And I'm unhealthy. [raised eyebrows]

Hey, Sassy...
nope. No one on Blogit spurred this post. It was hearing my choir director tell me the same story that my mom told me five years ago. Both of them were actively trying to lose weight, exercising and following a low-fat, low-cal diet, and both of them GAINED weight. When they went to their doctor to find out what was going on, both of them had doctors say, "Now, Ms. _____, you know that isn't true. If you'd stuck to the plan and not cheated, you'd have lost." A doctor did the same thing to me. So with three practically identical stories in five years, I figured that this couldn't be an isolated phenomenon. It just makes me mad. In fact, I may send this blog to my local paper as an op-ed piece.

I have always wanted to have it out with the local professionals in my town.  I cannot believe that they can promote health and be in a less than healthy state themselves.  What a contradiction in terms.

Editormum you should look at some of the alternatives to traditional health.  I recently arranged an International Women’s Day luncheon and one of our guest speakers spoke on nutrition.  She was the embodiment of health… She spoke with authority and we all listned.  Why? Because she was obviously living it.  And YOU can too!  Seek those who respect you first and help you second.

By the way
I'm nowhere near 23. I will be 40 in October. It gets harder as you get older.

Are you referring to my comment
to the UntoldOne? I guess since I have been in the shoes of an obese person, I feel like I can talk about being fat. You really can't let comments get to you unless of course they are directed towards you. The person I was talking to knows that I lost 90lbs. I still could use about 15lbs more off of my body. I can understand being defensive though. I get like that over certain topics. There are a lot of reasons that people are obese, and some people are that way because of not eating properly. I had a love affair with food during my pregnancy, and paid a high price. It took me years to shed the pounds, and I did receive mean comments which don't help. Good luck to you.

AGREED

I read a negative fat blog from a blogger and Got on my soap box read my blog on some people are not fat by choice.

I too have been on both sides -- I worked as an nurse for a cardiologist that told all his patients that they were fat..so I felt I had to become anorexic and did now I'm fat and sassy at 45 lbs over weight but I'm also not 23 anymore either

editormum, great post...
i hate to hear someone analalyze away another persons problems without walking a mile in their shoes and really don't like the thought that some people thrive on feeling superior over what others can't help ;-)
