Welcome, Writer's Journey!
To tell the truth, here in Ohio the problem is Republicans who depart from the principles of
Republicans! These nitwits are more concerned with playing Democrat than they are with the economic health of the state.

Of Southern and Suburban Strategies
Excellent post, Writeroflight:
Of course, we also know that since 1965 the Republican Party shifted tactics and went after those same racist Southern Democrat votes in the form of the "Southern Strategy."
This was followed, in due course, by the Democrats' own version of the Southern Strategy with the election of Jimmy Carter and what became known in the 1980s as the "Suburban Strategy," which essentially meant the same thing.
As a side note, both the Southern Strategy and the Suburban Strategy were not so much about race (although that was a significant factor) as they were about favoring deindustrialization, antipathy to urbanization, and antipathy to physical infrastructure.
The Democrats had been a pretty rotten party up until FDR tried to clean it up. Since that time the Democrats have turned their back on their strongest legacy, the FDR tradition. But is that very different from the way the Republicans turned their back on the Lincoln tradition, especially in terms of economic policies?

Writer.....
The Civil Rights issue is one of the top ten myths of the left.....The Republicans are the ones who passed the Civil Rights act.....
And Sen. Byrd...former KKK, was a strong opponent. Al Gore's father, too.
