- Go to First impressions on the State of the Union Address:
I can appreciate your point of view on this, but
isn't it just as ridiculous to compare Gore's reactions, as well?
My point was, this particular President isn't known for his maturity level so, to use him as your rating device is, well, a little out there. I did not watch the Address, so I really cannot comment on reactions from the Democrats, although perhaps they were trying to show their supporters that they did not agree with what he was saying. After all, isn't that the point of having supporters? You tell them, vote for me because I believe this or that? You can't very well turn around and clap and whistle for the opposite.
As for sending the wrong message to the enemy, perhaps, but they have news of the approval ratings already, so it isn't as though they are in the dark is it?

Welcome, Angela!
So glad you shared your thoughts! Of course he read a prepared text. Not only is that standard procedure, but his adventures in English when he speaks without a text verily demand it. The lack of boners, bloopers, blunders and other misunderestimations of all things grammatical demonstrate that it was a written speech. (As a life-long fan of Yogi Berra, I'm rather fond of such things myself.)
As for the Democrats, facial expressions were the least of their problems. See tonight's post on the Bush is an Idiot? blog at http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/WriterofLight/ for further discussion. Comparing the Democrats' conduct during the State of the Union to Bush's during the debates with Kerry doesn't really work, for the reason that the debates are intended to be confrontational, albeit politely, while the State of the Union Address is not. (By the way, I seem to recall the Sore Loser - a. k. a. Al Gore - indulging in a few theatrics of his own during his debates with Bush in 2000.)

This isn't going to be popular, but...
Has it not occurred to you that, he doesn't write that stuff? He simply looks at a speech that was written for him and reads it. If he does interject something of his own, in amongst the rhetoric, it generally isn't even a word, hence "misunderestimated". I don't like any of them and I don't feel that there is much honesty on either side, but to bash "democrats" for facial expressions and the like, after what we all was Bush do during the debates, come on.

writer,
The liberals crave power. The will not work with anyone. They won't work with conservatives when the conservatives are in power and they surely would not include the conservatives if they were in power. Also, a great comment by Corbin.

I especially liked it when.....
President Bush just took direct aim at Monday morning quarterbacks in the Congress who voted for the war in Iraq and now criticize the Administration.
Bush said, "Hindsight alone is not wisdom, and second guessing is not a strategy."
