With all due respect, I'm not sure what you mean by the Democrats' (I'm assuming you mean, mostly, Sen. Ted Kennedy) being overly harsh. He was doing his job, trying to get to appointee Alitto's true convictions and opinions. Politics is not a job for wusses, and I'm sure he's seen worse.
This a tenured, lifetime appointment, the public has a right to know his opinions. As for his wife's tears, perhaps she was tired. After all, she's not the one on the job.

I am not much on Robert Byrd, but I think you might be correct
here. He is a nice man at heart. His politics may irk some, but I really do think he is a good person deep down inside. I know the KKK part of his life is not something that is stellar, but I am sure he is truly sorry for being a member.
