The Problem of Securing the Peace
I have to disagree with Flame-thrower on a few points. First, Hamas has not given up armed struggle; they have simply expanded their activities to include the ballot box. This is no different from what the Iraqi resistance has done.
Second, the collapse of the Oslo Accord resulted from the assassination of Yitzak Rabin by the fascist faction within Israeli politics; a faction that was being worked into frenzy by the likes of Sharon and Netenyahu.
Moreover, the failure of Fatah to eliminate irregular warfare operations (a.k.a. "terrorism") was due in no small measure to Israeli bombing of Palestinian jails, police stations and other infrastructure. It was also complicated by the Israeli policy of assassinations, which inflamed the situation and made law enforcement more difficult.
On the other hand, the Israelis did not constrain themselves in their state terrorism directed against the Palestinians -- destroying entire neighborhoods. Nor did the Israelis deliver on their end of the Oslo Accord by dismantling settlements -- quite the contrary, at the time that Sharon and company declared Oslo as being "dead" (buried, apparently with Rabin by a right-wing assassin's bullet) Israel was expanding settlements in the occupied territories.
Sharon did not dismantle Gaza settlements until it became a military liability for him; and he refused to negotiate the settlement issue with the Palestinians. He also made the strategic decision to trade the Gaza settlements for establishing the permanency of the largest and most disruptive settlements in the occupied territory of the West Bank, thereby solidifying claims on all of Jerusalem as well.
I think it is important not to be one-sided as we look at events in the region, although narrow perspective presented by US media seem to encourage one-sidedness as "factual".

I have gone through your recent post and found it interesting, even though I do not agree with what you wrote. On the other hand, what you call Iraqi resistance should learn a lesson or two from the Hamas. They tried for long to use arms against Israel and were soundly defeated and have now taken the track of the ballot box. IF those in Iraq are speaking for the people let them take part in elections.

I want to thank you very much for having commented on my post. However, I noted the vitriolic that you have toward the Oslo agreement of 1993 which gave self rule to the Palestinians. Contrary to what you wrote, it was not a monkey business. Both sides had to make concessions and also meet clearly elaborated demands. You are well aware that, Yitzhak Rabin the Prime minister of Irael at that time made a lot of efforts and concessions. However, the Fatah, the political wing of the PLO never fought Hamas, Islamic jihad,PFLP. All these organisations have promised to throw Irael at sea. Had Arafat made the necessary efforts Palestinians will be in an independent state today.
