Straightforward,
Good post. My husband and I both do volunteer work on a consistent basis. He works full time fifty or so hours per week. I am retired. I volunteer two full days per week. I do Saturday Mornings and odd peice meal times here and there. It is such a blessing. I am involved in a group that helps mainstream women of all ages who are divorced and have no skills, are off drugs or alcohol and need a new beginning, some are drop outs and need GED testing. We do full time classes for them for three days per week with a new group coming in every 15 weeks. It is so rewarding to see the progress for so little help. In our group we have a dentist and his wife who close their office 1 day per week just to train these women who have come to that level on how to become an assistant etc. It is not dead in my town. My husband is a musician he works with a group in recovery on Saturdays, plays at church on Sundays and visits nursing homes or children's groups with music.

sometimes...
I think it is difficult to find a good volunteer. Many people seem to over extend themselves with too many things, too many projects, too many activities. I wish that people would simply make a choice of one group or activity. Then I believe you might have better results. Because, it seems to be the same people volunteering for everything. It is hard to find a new face. I recently began volunteering five years ago for Girl Scouts and I love it. But even this organization has this issue....

Nowadays charities want cash more so than volunteers. Cash can buy.......

expertise and this in turn will reward them with more money. Volunteerism belongs to a less hectic time when people had more free time.

Today we have charities lending out their named in return for a cash payment from those who use them to telemarket for profit. It's all so economical efficient, impersonal and slightly shady.

It is hard to commit to being a reliable volunteer

these days. There is always something that needs to be done just to stay afloat. On blogit, it can look like I am here a lot...I guess I am if you add it all up...but in reality, my time is scattered in bits and made more convenient by the location of my computer. Getting someplace, being there for X hours straight is the hard part... plus making sure someone is watching the kids at the time, etc.

We volunteered to be the den leader for our den...my husband and I share it, with me planning and prepping and him doing the meeting. We have been thanked profusely for doing it, but I don't think very many of the kids actually do the stuff they are supposed to outside of the meetings.

I have been clicking around by the way, just not leaving as many comments. My mouse is on it's last legs, No WAIT, they are GONE now, and it is hard to leave smileys now... Cannot comment without smileys!

hii

We all have forgotten that we are walking together, everyone feels that hes on his own but in actuality we are walking besides eachother & what we do does affect others but the realization seldom comes....

You asked me whats a lie? I would say lie is negation of faith rather than life, faith that is there in someone infront of you but you deny because it no longer affects you..whats truth then? that which is visible to you or that which you choose to cease to see...a truth for someone who lie and a lie for someone who has the truth...who's right & who's wrong can never be judged.

I think TV and other e-distractions take away from it. Cynicism

doesn't help either.  Its funny how the internet could connect everybody but it drains people also due to all the gloom and doom and spin.

Thanks for the tip on songbirdschafer...that was a good post.
