That would follow the logic that we do have some control over creating our own reality. As long as someone believes in such BULLSHIT, there will always be a level in which those kind of things are true.
I agree with that. Belief is a very powerful thing and can really have a direct affect on reality for that person. I personally have seen someone who was physically influenced by a 'ghost' because she had such a strong belief that a ghost was after her. I saw no ghost and had no belief in the ghost, so it left me along even though I was right next ot her as she was being pushed around by it.

kooka_lives -- uhh - can I ask my physics questions to the
"physic hotline" ?
Yep, people put far too much credence in the pseudo sciences but to answer the question you pose. There is a direct correlation with education and intelligence found amongst those who adhere to, or lend validity to such things. Ever heard of a college professor or other intellectual type giving much weight to this type of nonsense? It is a legitimate observation to note that academic credentials are few and far between amongst those who endorse the pseudo sciences. Whether it is politically correct to say it or not, these things really are the preserve of the bottom half of our specie's collective intellect, at least in terms of truly believing that these prophecies are correct. . . .But then there is the occassional crime solved by someone claiming to have such abilities, which leaves us with two strong influences. Those that are willing to adhere to such things have their belief strengthened by it, ignoring all failures, even if they outweigh the successes ....and the skeptics cannot say with absolute certainty that the means of solving the crime is bullshit.....So to answer the question another way; These things persist because we cannot completely refute their validity, at least not entirely to an absolute degree. All it takes for any of these things to work is just one human mind wanting it to work.

I am what?
As for starting up a new aquarium, not gonna happen. We have a real bad track record with aquarium pets. We'll stay focused on keeping my son' hamster alive for now.

I am Going to Do What I Do Not Like..lol
I like people to answer the question asked, yet, I am not. I will say that I agree with much said, yet as a believer in God, I think a balanced approached is necessary. For example, if one wants a car, one should not expect God to deliver to the doorstep, yet can believe in God and get a job or have investments to get one.
Again, we agree to disagree!
