I agree with you as to the literalist view of the Bible.
My religious education taught that the Bible is not a book of history or science, since some of the dates and places, some minor facts, might be off the mark.

kooka_lives - it was about 150 years ago that Darwin set a firmly
entrenched religious thought pattern on it's ear. He was hounded his entire life by those who felt it important to discredit him. He even had a Christian evangelist make up a whopper about being at his death bed and hearing him completely recant all of his theories. Such were the lengths that people were willing to go, in an effort to cling to and reconcile the story of creation. The facts to them simply didn't matter, the affront to what they wanted to believe was all they were capable of seeing. To witness a resurgence of this mindset in the 21st century is as pathetic as it is scary.
