blogflogger,
Here's more info:
A fundamental Blogit principle is that writers always have complete control of their work, including owning the copyright, and can do whatever they want with it.
The nonexclusive license described in the Terms of Use is designed to protect writers. It only allows Shaycom Corporation to display the work on Blogit, and does not allow the work to be published elsewhere without the writer's permission.
Even though it can still be plagiarized by members, outsiders cannot due to the fact that they can't read the entire post. Even so, if anyone feels the need (which IS understandable) to post a copyright (and chooses to use their real name) that does give them added protection and personal satisfaction. But there is also the "Digital Millenium Copyright Act" in tact to protect us. Since Blogit states and documents the a time/date stamp onto our posts as to when we posted, that also gives us leverage.
Backing up one's work (even in private forums) is never really a bad idea. Nowadays, ya never know! But at least it's known to the writer that it is protected and they don't have to feel the absolute necessity to post a copyright under their real name if they choose not to. Thanks for the comments.

Spitfire
I was curious too when reading the Blogit "help" text and they indicated all posts are auto-protected then inserted the comment "When posting your work on Blogit, add a "Copyright (c) 2005 Your Name. All rights reserved." notice to your work. This clearly states your copyright. " Confusing.

Thanks for that one. i haven't really looked carefully at the terms of
blogit and seeing that copyright sign was beginning to bother me as to whether my stuff is not copyrighted because I have not been putting in that sign.

iSiS,
I totally understand that! Like I said, I had a copyright infringement of one of my poems by the University of Wisconsin. I had to contact them two or three times about it! Well, I guess it can happen to anyone.

Spitfire,
I usually only put the copyright symbol on my fiction and poetry.  Don't know why I do this really, because I know it's automatic.  Just anal retentive I guess

I hear ya, ThomasF, however,
it's still YOUR work. I would just hate to see someone benefit financially or otherwise by stealing your words, ya know?

J-Mum, I just added something to this post...
A link and another suggestion to look further into this issue.

I never felt threatened by someone stealing my thoughts. Oh, they could snag a story or two but I still posess the brain that created it. They can't steal my brain.
